Epson 3800 printing

Recommended Posts

Advertisement (gone after registration)

I have recently acquired an Epson 3800 printer. It all seems to work fine on programmes other than Lightroom 3. On LR3 all the main printer adjustments e.g colour etc. are not available - the menu items are scored out. LR2.6/7 does not have this problem. (OSX10.6.3)

What is the reason and how can I get round it? Anyone else got this problem? All explanations and suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

(Mods: I would rather this was not merged in the general LR3 thread as it's likely a specific printer issue rather than a LR issue).

P.S. - the same problem appears in Phocus 2.5 BTW.

Brian, first let me congratulate you on a fine choice of printer. :D Second, thinking outside the square, I recommend trying Qimage to totally control printing to the 3800 (or any printer). There are three versions: Basic, Professional & Studio. Depending on your needs one or another is an excellent 'overseer' of all printing needs. It can be downloaded free as a trial. It has wonderful extra useful features besides just great printing output. Not expensive if you decide to buy.

Sorry, I can't address your original question.

The only problem with Qimage for me is that it's a Windoze programme and I"m on Mac; and I've no wish to run simulation software. But thanks for the thought Erl!

Brian, right now my PC is in need of a further lobotomy (just had one!). I am nearly(!) convinced to switch to Mac. (Not really)

Erl, ordinarily I would have no hesitation in recommending you to make the change. You will however have to get different versions of software unless you are going to run emulation programme(s), which does slow everything down. If you do go Mac - max. out on the RAM, if anything it seems to be more important than sheer processor speed.

Now - back to trying to get a decent B&W print out of the Epson .

Advanced black and white mode - easy peasy.

There are also some paper profiles that you can use. I have a link to them and the associated tutorial on my desktop at home. I'll post the links when I get back this evening.

I showed Andy Barton some prints I made on my Mac and 3800 the other week, and I'm sure he'd agree they're neutral.

Many thanks Steve, kind of you, and appreciated. I'll also do nozzle and alignment checks before I go any further, colour prints seem ok with a bit of tweaking, but B&W are c**p at present. Mre trial needed.

BTW - where is the best/cheapest source of OEM cartridges? Or are there other recommended brands?

Brian, the profiles I mentioned earlier are here...

ICC Profiles for the Epson 3800 Advanced B&W Photo Driver

and the instructions on how to use them are here...

Epson 3800 Step-By-Step Printing Workflow

It sounds a bit of a palaver, but most of the settings can be saved as a preset in the printer driver. If you want a b&w print made using this process pm me your snail mail address and I'll put one in the post.

I buy most of my supplies from Epson UK themselves. When I was looking for the "Real Photographic Paper" mentioned earlier they were actually the cheapest I could find.

I've tried buying ink from one of the cheaper resellers on Amazon, but in one case at least I'm convinced I was sent a refilled cartridge - the packaging was old and the cartridge wasn't in a airtight sealed plastic bag. Another reason for sticking to Epson.

I second this view.

Steve, thanks for providing these links. I use an Epson 3800 and, (says he touching wood, don't have problems) found them very informative; especially the first one.

FWIW I think it's best to stick with Epson. The volume of ink in the cartridges means that they last a very long time and so IMHO are fairly good value.

When I had a 2400, I used a Permajet CIS and whilst it was very good and economical to start with, it caused me no end of angst towards the end of the printer's life.

I have a friend who used a Permajet CIS on a 3800 and like in your case, it was good to start with but he ended up scrapping the printer. He's since bought another Epson and vows only to use their inks.

I buy my inks from B+H as I'm lucky enough to visit the States often.
