Sony NEX 5 vs Leica x1

I also have a NEX and an X1 (and an M9).

But you are confusing form and function in your camera / car analogy. I have in the past owned several Porsches but now drive an Impreza (much better than an Evo). Despite my "maturity" - I'll be 60 this year - I don't envy the Boxster owners at all. In case of the Impreza most of the cost goes into the engineering not the marketing. So I wind up with a better, faster, more usable car and enough money still in my pocket to fund my Leica addiiction.

The NEX has a great sensor, uninspiring Sony lenses and - I have found - very poor ergonomics. The user interface (despite Sony's intent on making easy for P&S shooter to use) is not designed for quick, easy adjustment. The X1 follows the rangefinder design ethic quite closely - everything you need to do can be accomplished very quickly (except maybe autofocusing - bring on firmware v2.0!). And it is fitted with a lens of extremely high quality.

So, in the same way that the Impreza has an impressive history of motorsport achievement and the Boxster does not, the images from the X1 are testimony to its underlying functional and design integrity.

Its funny, as after setting my buttons I find the NEX extremely fast to use.

I find it well designed, e.g. the on button is in just the right place.

It could benefit from an Aperture and a Speed dial, but frankly I am not sure where they would go on the body.

I'm shooting the Nex-5 with an adaptor for my 50mm summarit, summicron 90mm, and ZM 35 f/2 and 25 f/2.8 that I normally use on my M8.

Basically, I don't find the Nex/M-adapter combination usable for manual focus (I can't see focus on the screen), but in good light you can zone focus with the 25mm. The kit zoom is not inspiring, and the noise reduction is ugly, imo. You can get nice results from the Nex-5, I just don't like using it much.

I had great hope that the NEX would solve my low-light woes with the M8, but it looks like faster glass (or an M9) is the true cure.

Have you used magnification of focusing point?

Hmm, I also used NEX with M lenses. At higher ISOs - it simply doesn't deliver details.

Hi! I am actually using the nex-5 + adapter + Leica lens. I am very happy with the results,

I bought the camera december 3 2011. I already shot 3500 photos, the learning curve is a little complicate for me, because i am not use to digital. I previously used an M6 TTL and an M3.

I have a Summarit 50mm f/1.5, a Leitz Elmar 9 cm f/4, a Hektor 135mm f/4.5 all dated 1954, I also have a Leitz Summaron3.5 cm f/3.5 dated 1951, and Noctilux f/1 from 1984. All are great lenses, with very different "personalities", but great lenses.

I have bee shooting the all lot of lenses, mostly trying to get use to the new camera, different balance, low resolution display, in order to get the necessary sharpness with a non optical device, you must learn to "read" the display because you will not see the effective level of sharpness. The MF, manual assist focus, works very well, but in some situations it is to slow, that is why you must learn to second guess the display. If I knew how to upload I would do it, but I am not yet familiar with the system.

This is a great great forum.

Kind regards

Sergio

M9 is a bigger sensor with older tech and no AA. NEX is a smaller sensor with newer tech and an AA. Those that know how to optimize a RAW and sharpening workflow should be able to get similar results out of both with the same lens, outside of the different fields of view.

The X1 is not better in IQ than the NEX with a good lens. Of course, I'm talking about raw. I could care less about jpegs.

The AA filter of the NEX-5n is VERY weak. The main difference with the M9 is in the loss of MTF/IQ due to the higher spatial frequencies involved, about 10-15%. However, as long as the lens can resolve 115 lp/mm (horizontal/vertical) or 75-80 lp/mm (at 45 degrees) an intelligent sharpening/deblur can make the two camera outcomes equally sharp at reasonable ISO (say 1600).

Leica will have to up their game beyond the current standards, following the recent and large investment by the financial institution, and start selling in greater volumes to realise some return. I'd be amazed if they didn't collaborate with Fuji when the interchangeable lens version of the X100 is launched next year. Leica need to increase sales, and Fuji are making no secret of the fact that they want to become the third largest camera manufacturer behind Canon and Nikon. So a new Fuji, and lets face it, the X100 has already embarrassed Leica, followed by a cloned Leica version in the same vein as Panasonic. An adapter for M series lenses, so that the incredible lenses can be really exploited, and with a state of the art sensor. Considerably cheaper than an M9, but by no means cheap. I'd hold off buying a Sony if it was my money !!
