Super Elmar Lens & M9 ?

Because all Super-Elmar-M 18 mm Asph lenses are 6-bit-coded; non-coded ones don't exist. So there is no need to include it in the list of manually selectable lenses. By the way, for the same reason the list also doesn't include the Summarit-M line of lenses and a few others.

All true, but it's an irritating omission. For example, what happens if you want to use a similar lens from another manufacturer (say, Zeiss 18/4) and find nothing suitable to select in the menu?

I agree - it's irritating.

But then, I fully understand Leica's business logic here and can't blame them for that.

We should bear in mind that the M system is already one of the most open ones available (just ask SIGMA how much reverse-engineering is involved in offering 3rd-party lenses that are compatible with Canon or Nikon systems).

And DIY coding is still an option available for Zeiss or CV lenses. Also, Adobe's new lens profiling utility looks promising in this respect.

In fact, whilst it is irritating, I would have liked to try the 75 mm f2.5 correction with my CV lens, there is only a low likelihood that the correction for the Leica lens is exactly what is needed for the Zeiss. Unless the exit pupil is in the same place and the character of the vignetting is the same the correction is wrong. If you get the Zeiss you should try several of the choosable lenses to see which corrects the Zeiss to your taste.

Cheers

As long as the framelines are the same (50/75 framelines), you can still use the coding for the 18/3.8 and manually code your lens. 110100

Likewise Frank, the code for the 75mm summarit is 101101 (1 = black)

I think Leica's not supposed to take care of other manufacturer's lenses at all.
