patrick parker Posted May 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, There is one thing I don't understand about the X1. If I were to shoot with an M9 and a 24 mm and crop it down to the X1 sensor size ratio, would I be getting more or less same look as the X1. From "look" I only mean the similar type of distortion and angle of view . I have the X1 one but I don't have an M9 or a 24mm I would have loved to see the comparison. Oh and here's Erwin's thoughts on the X1 Thank you all. Patrick

01af Posted May 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 26, 2010 There is one thing I don't understand about the X1. If I were to shoot with an M9 and a 24 mm and crop it down to the X1 sensor size ratio, would I be getting more or less same look as the X1? Your question doesn't make any sense. As the sensors in the M9 and the X1 share the same ratio (which is 3:2), there is no need to "crop down" anything to make them equal. If you crop the M9 image down to the same sensor size then yes, you'd get the same field-of-view, the same angle-of-view, and the same perspective when using a 24 mm lens and shooting from the same distance. However you'd use only 8 MP. Or you could use a 35 mm lens on the M9 and not crop, and thus getting the same image at the full 18 MP resolution. Puts is writing a lot of nonsense in his X1 article. To get a serious comparison, he should have used a 35 mm lens on the M9.

Patrick If you crop the M9 frame to the size of the X1 sensor and use the same focal length (24mm on both) the images should have the same appearance if the f/stop is the same as well, in terms of angle of view (obviously) but also in terms of depth of field. If you would compare the X1 images to a FF image on the M9 with a 35mm lens then again the angle of view etc. is the same but to get the same depth of field you would need to set the M9 aperture about 1½ stop smaller i.e. about f/4. Shade Posted May 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 27, 2010 I don't have a 24mm lens either, but I personally think that the X1 will provide a less distorted picture...
