Took the X1 to NYC today... Shooting RAW + jpg fine.

I kept the camera on most of the day, letting it go into standby when I wasn't taking pictures. I chimped a little bit, but certainly not a lot.

By the end of the day, 8pm or so, I was at the lowest notch on the battery level indicator. I had started with a completely full charge before leaving for the city at about 9:30am.

I shot 76 photos.

This seems like particularly bad performance to me... But I also know that others have complained about battery life on the X1.

Is this the kind of performance I should expect?

I know I'll need at least one additional battery (if not multiple!), so wondering if anyone has gotten there hands on the Leica battery or a reliable 3rd party battery? I've had mixed results with 3rd party batteries myself on other cameras... Some proving excellent, others not so much...

Your thoughts on this all are appreciated!

Hello!

I am using a X1 for three months. The first cycles with the new battery where a little disappointing. But now i can shoot 250-280 pictures dng+jpeg with a full battery. I have a spare one (Leica). I have used my camera from -15°C to +28°C. I don't take care of energy saving so much but i don't use the flash.

Similar findings to Michel, the first few cycles on a new battery was very disappointing, was lucky to get 75 - 90 frames in an afternoon of shooting. But after the first 4 or 5 cycles of draining and charging, I can now get about 250+ in a full day of shooting (9am - 7pm).

The performance of one battery is acceptable, however, I strongly recommend getting at least one spare. And keep it Leica. 3rd party camera batteries have given me very poor experiences in the past.

i think for a photographer like yourself, who, judging from the wonderful, mysterious and carefully composed and post processed pictures on your website, likes to shoot in remote, abandoned locations. therefore carrying a spare leica battery or two is essential and a no-brainer. how many do you carry for your m8? any brand new rechargeable battery needs to be fully charged and completely exhausted several times before reaching peak performance levels. if you want to be sure that it's going to work properly, get the leica battery unless this is otherwise proven by yourself to be incorrect. i searched your site but i didn't see anything from your x1 posted there yet

I don't have a good idea from Amy's post how much time the camera actually was ON, since the X1 uses significant power even when not taking photos, if the power is on. I've been through many recharge cycles, and I still get typically less than 100 shots per cycle -- I don't take a lot of shots, but I keep the camera powered up by occasional half-clicking of the shutter. My average walk-around time with camera always on, before changing the battery, is around 3-4 hours - as good as any other compact camera I've used.

There's x1 photos in my "new" gallery and in the Picture-a-Day (PAD) gallery (under "series") if you want to see shots :)

Thanks for the feedback... I've only bee through 2 charge cycles so I will hope to get better performance soon. I actually found a leica battery on ebay (popflash) so bought one. 75 shots is actually a lot for me in one day... But with the m8 I've never had a problem getting through a day.

i appreciate that you are selective, it shows a thoughtful and creative approach to your work, which i like tremendously. i have a viewfinder attached constantly to my x1 copy and rarely use the monitor for framing or chimping, just changing settings and occasional review and delete. power save is set to minimum settings, auto off, etc., my monitor is always off. anything to save power, except for the autofocus which i use unashamedly 80% of the time. it seems to work and my one battery hasn't disappointed me yet..i'll get a spare when one becomes available locally

I thought so; only two cycles. Most Lithium Ion batteries take a little time to produce their maximum capacity. Yesterday I shot 83 pictures. At the end two bars were showing and I would expect to shoot twice that number before thinking about changing the battery. I carry a spare, but have yet to use it during a shoot. I do rotate the batteries to equalize usage. For a compact camera I think the small battery in the X1 does quite well. My M8 does better, but it is bigger.

I can quite easily go through 3 batteries during a day's shooting - I usually use manual focus & continuous mode and review pics every 30 mins or so.

How many shots, typically, does that represent?

Thanks Brill!

I just bought a Helios viewfinder so that'll be nice to have when it gets here. Im not a big chimper in general... I kinda shoot digital almost like film and 76 photos in a day is actually a LOT for me... Not typical at all. Just comparatively to the EP1, the X1's battery life is pretty dismal.

It's okay... I've got another battery on its way and can live with it...
