holmes Posted May 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just had delivered a Leica of the beautiful hard leather case. On the bottom is embossed E. Leitz, Rockleigh, New Jersey. Made in the USA is some of the information contained on label on the cardboard box. This I believe to be its original packing, shipping box. The catalog number is 98271. The top tray lifts off and I suspect has not been opened or exposed to light in a long while. I have the tray sitting out in the New Mexico sun. It has 4 moveable partitions in the top tray. The cloth is like a very fine chamois. The exterior of the case is clean. Deep brown with visible scratches. Leather shoulder carrying strap, a fold over hand grip and a lockable strap (no key). The interior of the case is fine. Even without the top tray then I have all of the case for bodies and lenses, in their cases plus cleaning supplies and film. Now what I would like to know from you historical buffs, tell me about my new case if you would.
Advertisement Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Hi holmes, Take a look here Leiitz, Leica Hard Leather 2 tier Case. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ismon Posted May 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2010 Your 98,271 "Carry-all" case was designed specifically for the long lens user. Cradles are permanently installed in the bottom half for the 400mm F/6.8 Telyt with mounting tube, and the 560mm F/6.8 Telyt Head. Measuring 17x10x9.5" the two-layer case holds plenty. For yet additional storage, there were two matching snap-on pockets # 98,278. An optional strap # 98,267 converted a pocket to a small case. The carry strap for the large case was # 98,277. Elementary my dear Holmes. Some of us have as much invested in old literature as we do in the equipment.
