(4) I really doubt it's my finger (I tried positioning my finger to partially block the RF window and it was way uncomfortable for me to have been doing it).......

Just so we're clear, this is the window everyone is talking about (circled in red below):

The reason I ask is because I don't have hands the size of the Hulk yet my middle finger easily reaches the window when my index finger is on the shutter.

Anyway, I was able to reproduce your problem by extending my middle finger out in front of the window (not touching it). For some reason, in bright light the Rangefinder patch through the viewfinder completely disappears. But if I step back into some shadows (low light), the patch is visible but focus is unattainable when twisting the focus ring on the lens barrel.

I agree with the others, it's most likely your finger.

Hi William, yeah, I do know which the RF window is. I've got the Thumbs-Up attached which makes it more difficult to block that window. That said, you're all may be right and it could well be my finger. Lets see if it occurs again. :)

I think Mark Norton reported that in a few cases the tracking roller can slip off the rangefinder cam.

...

I have done a couple of complaint posts on this. If that happens you know it; there is no friction when you turn the focus ring. It's probably uncommon, but I think Rich Cutler's blog mentions a couple of 90's that can have this issue. I had this problem with a lens on both M8 and RD1. I noticed the M lenses have a wide range of cam diameters, 31-35mm, and the problem lens had the widest diameter. But that is just my fanciful speculation--I don't know if the lens or the arm adjustment or both caused the problem.

It almost certainly was an ergonomic issue.

It doesn't require an overt blocking of the RF window. Any partial obstruction of light between you and the subject will cause that behavior. There are numerous focus poses which will manifest it.

Had it been a true rangefinder-coupling issue you'd have felt it, not just observed it.
