Hello All, I've run into a situation that I hope is user error. While shooting in the Aperture mode and I choose "Forced on/Red-Eye" or "Forced On" from the flash options it is not defaulting to 1/30 second in low light. The camera will chose the shutter speed based on no flash at all when in the "forced" flash mode.

It will set to 1/30 when I choose "Auto" and "Auto Red-Eye". Should it not default to 1/30 in low light when "forcing" the flash on?

Well I just changed the white balance and it started working.... Has anyone encountered this issue?

Reginald, welcome to the Leica forum!

I rarely use flash except for fill-in outdoors. However, taking your scenario, I can well see that if you are choosing a small aperture in low light using the lowest ISO setting the shutter speed will be forced to try and balance the exposure where the flash range is deemed to short to give correct exposure.

From what I understand and have experienced -- the minimum shutter speed is for the "Auto" modes of the flash. Mine doesn't enable the minimum shutter when in forced mode as well. But all is good in Auto.

Exactly what do you mean that it started working when you adjusted the white balance? I always keep mine on AWB.

For the white balance I adjusted it from "flash" to "AWB". I get it, your saying the "auto" will adjust the shutter speed but "force" will not. I wanted to assume that "force" would do the same. I now understand it does not. Thank you for your input mcobb533.

When in doubt read the manual Reggie!!

Automatic flash activation with slower shutter speeds –

For simultaneous more appropriate (brighter) reproduction, particularly for dark backgrounds and flash fill-in for the foreground. To minimize the risk of blurring, the shutter speed is not extended beyond 1/30s in the other modes with flash activation. For pictures where the flash is used, this means that objects in the background, which the flash cannot reach, are often badly underexposed. To take appropriate account of the available ambient light, the longer shutter speeds necessary in these exposure situations (up to 30s) are permitted here.
