Well, it's either a long lens or a short bazooka. :-)

The Contax/Zeiss I have is 8 Lbs (3.6kg) not your basic handheld. The Leica would be a 280 (the MF Contax is 210mm equiv) so about the lower end of what is feasible for me (Doug, is Doug. He gets stuff with a WA I can't get with my modular 800mm. Maybe I'm just a noisy guy! )

Actually Doug is right - either you get close or you need a LOT of magnification. I'm not unhappy with the DMR and Modulars or thye 400/6.8 and 10MP, That's not the driver for me. What was telling about the S2 was that my wife said (without a hint of sarcasm :-) ).....

" in a few years you will appreciate a lighter system than the Contax..."

(For the record, the S2/70 was 4lb 3oz to the Contax/Phase 5lb 8oz)

Maybe I'll ask her to buy an S2 for me.

I did notice on a short test drive of the S2, that the 100% crops, even thru plane windows and handheld were quite sharp. I really 'overpushed" some of the processing - out the plane window, hazy, early morning 5 mile shots to get 100% that were workable if not great.

Next go around I need to see what 37MP and the 180 could get me. (Again, for the record, I tried some pretty wierd shooting with the S2/70mm, stuff I wouldn't try with the Contax/Phase, since I knew that they couldn't stand the excessive processing needed. I tried hard to fool the AF, which BTW is damn fast if you compare to MF, not 135 format.

It convinced me the S2 was worth going to the next step; that is rent for a trekking shoot where there are harsh lighting conditions, and quick response needed, as well as schlepping over rough terrain and 1,000ft climbs. 35, 70,180? nice travel pack. What would it weigh, I wonder.

Even with 37MP, there are more MPs I can get on a bird with my DMR and the Modular 800mm and crop than even with the 350 contax or hassey.

regards

Victor

Not to change the subject here but with the APO telyt modular , I converted an extra 1.4 teleconverter to a Nikon mount and used it on the D3x. It gave me more pixels than the DMR as well as live view focussing capability. I am not much of a bird photography person but had some very decent results even though manually focussed

I am looking forward to the 350 as well as the 30-90 lenses. Long wait but I am happy with the current 70 I have. Hope to pick the 35 when I am in the US in two weeks but don't know who will have it ready for pick up.

Have you got one of the R10 announcement, too?

Hmmm, isn't that because there was never an R10 prototype to begin with, as opposed to the displayed-for-all-to-see-and-photograph APO-Elmar-S 350mm?

Oh wait, now I get the logic: the R10 announcent was retracted, ergo all announcements by Leica after that will be retracted! ...
