400 or 800 ASA rating? Advice required

...cannot quite remember if I shot a roll of HP5+ at 400 or 800 ASA (don't ask) and I now need to process it. I am comfortable with my processing regime but, in view of my error, will a 400 ASA or an 800 ASA development time ultimately produce better negatives across the range? Or should I attempt to to mitigate by "middling" it?

 

Any advice will be gratefully received.

HP5 should be forgiving enough to allow a stop either way. Which is the most likely speed at which you might have shot it?

What's the subject matter? If you know which tones are the priorities it might be easier to decide.

...critically need to retain the shadows in several low-light shots.

I always found that B+W film, no matter what is more forgiving if over developed/exposed. One stop never gave me a problem. I say go for +1.

When in doubt then develop as if the film was exposed at E.I. 800.
