well there are companys who can recover files from physically damaged harddrives.

when my hard drive broke down i sent it to one of them (i can find out the name, it wa sin germany though) they made an estimate of costs and when it was to much for me (only because i backed up a month earlier or so) they then send it to they company who produced the harddrive (it was still under guarantee).

this might be a possible way for sou to get back some of your images

Ouch! That's a hard way to learn a lesson. I just swapped the HD in my MBP for an SSD so it should stand up to shocks better and it is so much faster. Even so, I'm not stopping my backup regime (a daily SuperDuper! clone kept in the office, and one kept at home, plus a Time Capsule at home and a network attached drive for photos only). I'll bet that despite this my negs will still be available to me far further into the future than the digital images.

Blimey, did you drop it out of an aeroplane?

Next time use the time machine feature of Mac OS X - it couldn't be made much easier. Just periodically plug in an external drive (£50-100) and you have your backup.
