lagrassa Posted April 28, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted April 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) This church was built in the Spanish Colonial style by Indian slaves between approximately 1610 and 1626, and then nearly destroyed during the Pueblo revolt of 1680. It is claimed to be the oldest church in the United States. In 1710, the Spanish once again took control of Santa Fe and rebuilt the church. During the Spanish reconquest of the city, the church served for a time as a chapel for the Spanish soldiers. The religious artwork in the building is very inspirational, and the bell dates to the early 1300s. The bulto of San Miguel Arcangel, seen prominently on the altar, dates back to at least 1709, and was added in 1798. Though the church has been repaired and rebuilt numerous times over the years, its original adobe walls are still largely intact, despite having been hidden by later additions.
