Help (!) or assurance needed; I have inadvertently changed the shutter speed setting on my father's IIIf before winding on; all the way round to the 30-1 setting. I know that this is not the right thing to do. Everything seems to be still working OK but have I done any damage and should it be sent to an expert for checking? I have not confessed my father yet and am hoping it will not come to that.

Thanks, JC, I forgot to mention that it is a Black Dial model but presumably I just set the nearest numbers........

In an old book (The Leica Way) from the 50's the author says that isn't any problem to change the speed before winding. He ever says that is possible to use as a "mark" the number "2" from the flash syncronization.

Anyway, he says too that is no trouble to use the high speeds with the low speed dial in 1/10s, 1/5s, etc - not necessary to be at 1/25. Except, of course, to B and T, when would happens an extra delay. This is very different than everything I've heard and read, but makes sense.

For my routine I ever change the speeds after winding, and put the low speed dial always at 25. At least I never get a surprise when get a developed negative, because any errors in exposure...

Have you ever seen a Leica III/a/b/c/f/IIIg with the top cover lifted? You would be surprised about how simple

they are.You can always change shutter speeds whenever you want, the rule "only after winding on" is only

there to make sure you have set the shutter speed you want next to the indicator.

All slow speed on the front slow speed wheel, and that includes B and T, are only working if the top wheel is

set to 30 or 20 depending on the model you use. In all other shutter speeds the slow speeds are

mechanically disconnected and will not run off or have any influence on your selected shutter speed.

On some Barnacks you can turn the shutter speed selector 360 degrees just because there is no stop screw

inside, on those which still have it it is possible to remove that stop screw just for convinience reasons, one

can go from 1000 to B directly.Impact on the mechanics will be zero, no damage.

Have fun

Jo
