Printing M9 (larger) Files

I am expecting delivery of an M9 soon and I have a printing question.

I often print on A4 paper (8.5x11") using the print utility QImage. Question is, how should I deal with the extra pixels. With my M8 if I want to make smaller prints, I "downsize" the file by changing the resolution, say from 360dpi to 540 or 720. That way, I am using all the pixels.

I change the resolution settings using factors of 1440 or 2880dpi.

Does this approach make sense?

My experience with Qimage and the M8/9 is that relatively small files, say 10MB or 5MB or even 2MB will print very successfully. Unless I am printing say A2 size, I will usually not process RAW files larger than 10MB. Even then, 10MB will print very satisfactorily through Qimage. I assume you are familiar with the way Qimage upres's files, very successfully.

I suggest you trial few different file sizes of one image and print them to see what you are happy with.

I'm not personally familiar with Qimage, but in general you'll not gain noticeable improvement by printing at greater than 300 or 360 dpi. "Downsampling" to me means throwing away pixels, not trying to shoehorn however many are available into one's chosen print size.

The benefit of the high resolution of the M9, or other similar cameras, is being able to maintain that idealized 300/360 dpi at larger print sizes. i.e. I can print bigger print sizes with my M9 than I could with my M8.

For an A4 print on the M9 I'll simply leave print resolution at 360dpi and throw away the extra pixels.
