According to the manual, movie files are limited to 2 GB. At the HD setting this limit is reached after 10 minutes and 30 seconds. (The Panasonic LX3 and in fact many other cameras are similarly limited.)

I may be wrong here, but at one time I think Panasonic hobbled video recording time for certain export models.

As I recall, the Japanese domestic versions had longer recording capabilities, because some countries to which the cameras were exported had higher import duties on "video cameras," and the line between video and still cameras was drawn based on the maximum length of a single recorded sequence.

(Specs for those models would say something like "Video recording unlimited, except model XXX-yyy, 10 min.")

Or maybe I'm making it all up. Can't find any supporting evidence for my assumption in a quick search.

At any rate, that's not the case with the LX3 and D-Lux 4. Panasonic instructions simply specify the same maximum recording time for all versions.

Yes, but even according to EC customs regulations, a digital camera only turns into a camcorder when recording 30 minutes of video. Which is why many cameras for the European markets, the Panasonic GH1 for example, stop recording one second shy of that figure, i.e. after 29 minutes and 59 seconds. The EC versions of the Panasonic LX are similarly restricted to recording 15 minutes of video (the versions for the Japanese and US markets are not), but all versions of that model (and the D-Lux 4 likewise) are restricted to recording 2 GB. This must be some kind of technical restriction.

i wolud like to film hd vid with my dlux 4 yet it lets me film not more then 10m30sec although i have a big 16giga card

only leica has this limitation any one knows why? or how to overcom this irritating problem

peace n love

I could be wrong, but all the 10 min 30 sec means max clip length, so say you max out that 10 min 30sec, it should let you record another 10 min 30 sec and so on until your card is full. I have a 16 gig card as well and if I remember this is happened to me....

i think i a mater of software and it can be solved easly al we need is to send as meny letters as posible to leica and ask them to fix it

it cant be be that such an exp camera would not be able to do such a simple thing

As it is a documented feature of the D-Lux 4 and LX3, Panasonic wouldn’t see this as something to “fix”.

this is the answer i got from leica

Dear Mr. Kaner,

thank you very much for your interest in the Leica system.

The built-in time limitation for video takes is not a technical deficit. It is a limitation by law regarding the customs duty for exporting our products in foregn countries. Without this time limitation the camera would have to be declared as a video camera at the customs, so that the selling price would be much higher. That is why we limit the time and declare the camera as a pure photo camera to keep the price low.

This is also the reason why the time limitation won't be changed with the next update.

Thank you very much for your understanding and nevertheless have a nice time with your Leica D-Lux 4.

Mit freundlichen Gruessen / kind regards

Martin Seeliger
