re magenta ears, for interest I'm posting two versions. One processed through LR2.7 and the other through LR3 Beta 2. Anyone willing to say which was which? FWIW my take on the guy's ears was that they were pretty red anyway...

3rd image is of another person whose ears weren't red...

HI Chris

I hope you're well, and recovered from the attentions of Caspar!

well, the second image seems to have 'snappier' micro-contrast, but also slightly pinker reds. (I agree about the red ears though).

I've no idea which is which, as I haven't used either of the recent versions.

best wishes to Sue

I think the ears look less pink in the second image, and the overall skin tones look just a bit more natural. It's not a big difference, though.

Clearly that guy has some seriously red/pink ears. :D

The skin tones look great in the third image.

BTW, if you have LR3 Beta 2 you can change the raw processing to match the LR2 ACR engine. Just go to Camera Calibration when you're in Develop mode, and choose 2003 under Process. It's also an easy way to quickly show the difference in quality that the new 2010 engine produces. There is an especially noticeable reduction in the chroma noise.

I just took a series of shots of my daughter, who has very fair skin, and it seems to my eye that using a +20 on the red hue to shift from magenta towards red, and a -10 saturation on the reds does a really good job of making her skin look much more natural. Her lips go from a more glowing magenta to a natural dark pink. I used the Embedded Leica/JenOptik profile rather than the Adobe Standard profile, although the two are awfully similar to each other.

Thanks for comments! For the record, #1 (001_L1001843.jpg) was processed in LR2.7 and #2 (001_L1001843-2.jpg) was processed in LR3 Beta 2. Basically the guy had red ears.

Two other comments.

1/ Overall, I'm hugely impressed by LR 3 (can't comment on how NR compares with other programs - but it's definitely a massive improvement over LR2).

2/ Apparently 2003 process is NOT identical to how things were done in LR2.6 - there are differences that are commented on in the Adobe forums.

3/ Interesting to hear Jeff's comments on the embedded Leica profile - I really don't like this compared to the Adobe Standard

4/ The final image (man without red ears) was processed in LR2.7 with the Adobe Standard profile - WB adjusted by clicking off the wall behind.
