Thumbs up!

I haven't tried Thumbs Up, but I had the same "this is how it should be" feeling when I added the grip to my M8.

Therefore the question: Had any of you three posters used the handgrip before the Thumbs Up?

I had the M8 for a couple of months before I got the Thumbs Up...I think that this accessory makes all the difference - without it I probably would not have kept the M8. with it, I choose the Leica over my other cameras 90% of the time.

Yes, it is that important for this camera, imo, i agree. It has completed the m8 for me, with the grip i think. Holding the camera now feels right and it has become a much more creative tool. (as opposed to the canon 5d2 which i just bought and which doesn't feel like that to me and which i regret buying).

I have both the thumbs up and the Leica grip for my M8. I wish I just had the thumbs up. I use the thumbs up all the time and keep the Leica grip in a drawer! The thumbs up feels just right. It makes the camera handle even better and gives it a more "secure" feeling. Only problem is that the thumb pokes me in the ribs a little, which I feel after several hours hiking. No big problem, I just shift the camera around. For more security when I don't use a neck strap I use a loop "wrist strap" which I made myself out of a shoe lace. I tie it to the strap attachment point on the shutter button end of the camera (please don't tell the Leica folks I have a shoe lace tied to the M8, they would surely become hysterical). The "lady bug" on the button is also surprisingly helpful and nice to use.

The grip works well but it is larger and does not feel as "natural" to me. I think it changes the feel of the handling of the camera a lot more than the thumbs up.

Sorry if I'm not expressing my self very well, hope this is helpful.

Bill, the description is super!

And hearing from someone who has tried both is exactly what I was hoping for.

I bought the M8 long before I had heard of the Thumbs Up. I bought the handgrip because everyone who had one expressed the same delight as people do today about the Thumbs Up. For me, the camera became more secure and more usable with the grip.

Thumbs Up users say it's great, of course, but if I don't hear from someone who has used both, I can't tell whether I might benefit from the switch.

Thanks! :)

I've got larger hands. I have used the ThumbsUp from early on. I use it with the MD-Grip or with the Luigi Case w/grip. Tried both the grip and ThumbsUp alone, neither of which really felt right until used in conjunction with either of my grip options.

Howard - I have tried - briefly - an M8 with a hand grip, and while I found it a vast improvement over the bare M8, it doesn't have the same natural ergonomic that the Thumbs Up offers. With the Thumbs Up, your thumb carries the weight of the camera without effort - the weight seems, if anything, to be a beneficial force. With the hand grip, you are still required to squeeze the camera to be secure, and that is tiring to the hand over the course of an hour or two. I found the paint surface of the Thumbs Up to be unnecessarily slick, so I added a piece of stair tread safety tape to it, and I have been a happy camper ever since. [i bought the T.U. over two and a half years ago.]

I should mention that I have never wanted to use the hot shoe...

Good point about the large hands. I have small hands so I had to "stretch" to use both the thumbs up and the Leica grip. It didn't feel right.

I have also noticed the smooth slippery finish of the thumbs up, but I didn't think think of putting some kind of tape over it. I'm afraid if I use both tape and a shoe string on my M8 Leica will have a "melt down" to quote my 13 year old grand daughter!

Bill - As you can probably tell from my avatar, I have girlie-hands...probably the reason the hand grip didn't seem to reduce effort for me. :D

Attached is a snapshot of the camera with the safety tape in place. It looks enough like the color and texture of the camera body to not seem cheap or intrusive. It also hides what I consider to be less than stylish Thumbs Up typeface.

I was unfortunate to have the top plate on one of my M8's work loose about a year ago resulting on it having to be tightened up under warranty. I like the idea of the thumbs-up but am reluctant to fit one as I think it might put unnecessary pressure or leverage on the plate. Have any thumbs-up users experienced loosening problems? Are my concerns valid?

I have several products from Match Technical... their quality and customer service is fantastic. I asked Tim about a hot shoe version of the thumbs up and he replied that they were ready for production. I don't use my flash much but not having to remove the thumbs up would be a welcomed improvement.
