Don't ever judge exposure by just looking at the picture in the monitor. Check the histogram -- and for that purpose a plain brightness graph, not a RGB one, is best.

Because it is less messy and thus quicker to read. Remember that the histogram is small. And the question of what colour you are overexposing in is not terribly relevant. It is general exposure you are interested in.

 

The bandwidth of the human cognitive apparatus is very limited. Don't overload it.
