cron Posted April 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I intend to buy a CPL-filter and an (lens protection) UV-filter for my Leica R 21-35. CPL I need to buy a slim-version filter because of vignetting. Will a slim filter also be necessary for an UV or may I attach a filter in normal height without vignetting? Thanks for help. dhsimmonds Posted April 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2010 The R21-35 is a great lens and I have never had problems with vignetting either with standard CPL or standard UV filters. You have no need to use slim rimmed filters if using with a DMR back as the 1.37 crop ensures that the lens is not "reading" the edges of the lens. I have never used this lens with a FF film R camera, so unable to comment.

Cron If you have the instruction booklet for your lens, you'll know that it says you need to use a slim variant of the circular polariser (which you are intending to use) and not the standard Leica one. However, so far as the UV filter is concerned, the booklet recommends the standard Leica filter 13386. However, despite this, I have the B&W slim variant on mine, to play safe at the 21 end, and I've not had any vignetting problems. I'm sure you are aware that polarisers aren't always very succesful with an ultrawide, because of the large variation of incident angle of different parts of the subject leading to a variable polarisation effect across the image. Personally I would only use one at the 35 end of the zoom range.
cron Posted April 13, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted April 13, 2010 Dear John, dear Dave! thanks for your tips, they are useful for me because I only have the lens without manual! I will use the lens together with film, so FF regards Norbert
