Since starting to show my photographs on the lounge HD television driven by its own computer in order to seriously bore all my friends and those who I drag in of the street, I have started cropping almost all shots to 16 by 9 in order to get a full screen image.

Initially I felt guilty but now not so, cropping the Barnack format to 16 by 9 having taken time to get the correct image in the first place, I am digitally converted from colour reversal film, is proving remarkably simple and I hope successful.

Has anyone else been reconfigured?

No. Even if I chose to show my images on a wide screen, 16/9, TV I'd leave the images in or near there original format, 3/2. That's what I saw through the VF and most of the time what I wanted to capture.

David, I come down half-way between you and Ed.

When shooting, I try to use the full format of the camera, whatever it is.

If your intended output is the TV screen, IMHO there's nothing wrong with shooting the subject originally with the viewpoint that the shot will later be cropped.

In fact, with the D-Lux 4 I find myself most often shooting at 16:9 simply because I find it a comfortable aspect ratio to work with. I guess that's why so much cinema was shot at the nearly identical 1.8:1.

If I'm doing a "video" from the get-go - I crop for 16:9, and shoot with that in mind.

It is not really any different than stitching Barnack-format shots to make a panorama.

If I were doing a slide show of still images as still images, I'd use them as shot (how does one crop a vertical to 16:9?)

My sites below contain some videos built (in whole or part) from stills.

For TV I crop to 16:9 too. True, it is not exactly as I saw it through the VF but it is as I want others to see it in 16:9 :) If it is any good then chances are I will have a proper 3:2 print of it to show around.
