X1 skin ailment

I bit the bullet today and took my X1 back to the dealer with its peeling skin. They agreed it shouldn't happen and are sending it back for repairs. Being in Canada, it goes first to New Jersey and then who knows. I'll keep you posted on what happens.

Follow up on the progress of your repair, and don't accept assurances that aren't accompanied with personal knowledge of your camera.

I just received my X1 about 3 days ago, which would be the second batch produced by Leica, I can't see where there could be any possibility of the Skin coming loose or (peeling). Can someone with this problem please post a 100% crop of this issue.

Mine is coming off on the back left hand side of the camera where it meets the rear screen. It started lifting within a couple of days of having the camera , but while I was on holiday last week, it started to lift away in a bad way, The glue was melting and it was not that warm especially on the coast in the U.K. I would imagine it is the wrong type or at least very different to what has been used on other Leica cameras. It is now back with Leica and I hope to hear something from them soon.

I have already sent mine directly to Leica NJ from Canada, they fixed the skin in no time and returned to me within 3 days after their receival. You can call them directly to follow up with your progress by giving them the serial number.

So I got a call from the dealer today regarding my X1. Leica's going to repair it but they won't replace it or give back credit to the dealer (which would have resulted in me getting a refund). I'm still pretty annoyed with the whole thing, just because I think it's a huge mistake of the dealer not to let customers know of their "all sales final" policy until after the purchase. I love the X1, but Leica's quality control these days have been less than stellar and the dealer's attitude about this whole debacle really gave me a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyway the dealer told me that I could call Leica myself and ask them directly for a replacement so I'm going to try that on Tuesday (I doubt they will, but I would rather try and fail than not try at all). He also said that if I really want the money back, he will sell it as used without taking any of the profit (apparently there are people who are willing to pay higher than market price, even for used, so long as they get it faster). What shall I do? Any input is appreciated.

I'm definitely calling Leica on Tuesday and if they refuse to replace it, then I'll either take and use the repaired camera or ask the dealer to sell it for me... Meh, I'll probably just use the repaired camera since they were just build issues -- I really do love the X1, I just hated this whole experience with the dealer.

I would keep the camera I have had no other problems with my X1, it is just a cosmetic problem that will be sorted fairly quickly. I sent my camera back to leica, instead of going through the dealer so I hope it will not be to long before I get the X1 back.

Its just the same when you buy a car that has just been launched there are always product recalls with them. I am afraid manufacturers seem to be in a rush to get their latest product out before thier competitors that initially the first few products in a production run suffer from minor quality issues.

So I called Leica yesterday and explained that my dealer told me to call them myself if I really wanted an exchange. The lady on the phone was so nice and told me that the dealer shouldn't make me do all that hard work haha. Then she asked me to call the dealer and tell him to call Leica because they had to talk to the dealer directly. So I did that, and neither the dealer nor Leica called me back yesterday, so I called Leica again today. I found out that they're giving me an exchange so that's good, but I have to go to the dealer to pick it up and they said they couldn't change that. I'm really crossing my fingers that the next one won't have so many problems...

Good luck with that. In regards to Leica's quality control, I believe it may have slipped by=ut market forces are pressuring Leica do to do so. They no longer have the time frame they used to, and quality assurance and control cost money and with fierce competition I'm not so sure they could last if they maintained their previous quality standards for the prices tehy're selling today.

And you can't compare prices to previous as the M9 costs a hell of a lot more to design and manufacture than the M film series did. I think in the short term we'll need to accept such issues if we want Leica to stay in business. Id rather see Leica exist with some issues than no exist at all.

Had a new replacement camera from Leica U.K today the serial number starts 3819 instead of my original camera starting 3812.

The vulcanite covering looks much more secure. The shutter and aperture dial problem has been fixed they both click into place far more positively. Also the battery cover fits nice and level and it does not spring up so forcefully when you open it up.

I am very pleased with the fast and efficient service I have received from Leica U.K

Well my X1 finally started to show the peeling vulcanite, in a big way, yesterday. Mine looks to be pretty early, 3813xxx.

Mine also has a slight battery cover issue but the thought of sending it out for these issues bugs me. I might just have to re-glue and bear it.

That said, I'm going to give my dealer a call to see what they think.

Overall, happy with the camera. For what it is it's quite good.

Do not try and glue the vulcanite yourself, Leica told me, when I asked if I could do it myself was that I would void the warranty. Glad I sent it back now the new camera is great with the issues all sorted out.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a very early X1 with most short edges lifting a bit. I really like the post from dkpeterborough with the link to cameraleather.com. I think I'd really like the griptacs' better grip but what a neat way to bring more character to the X1. Thanks for the post!
