I perhaps have no business mentioning this on the Leica forum, but I'd bet very few here have ever heard of Luke Powell, formerly of North Carolina, now living in Nova Scotia.

Luke was one the the MOST exhibited photographers in the 80s and 90s, not just in the US, but also seen in Europe. What did he do?

In the 70s (fresh out of Divinity School at Yale) -- and then later in the 90s -- he went out to Afghanistan and other parts of Central Asia and shot incredibly fine pictures -- landscapes and portraits -- and then mastered the dye-transfer process and printed his work for show.

He captured a sustainable, timeless world in Afghanistan especially, but elsewhere, too -- before the Soviets and later the Americans got involved with what was and will be a futile attempt to "win" the Asian wars.

I really recommend forum members visit Luke Powell - Photographs Fine Art Landscapes Afghanistan pictures Pakistan Ladakh Middle East Central Asia Travel Muslim Islam Palestine Egypt Vermont Chapel Hill Ceylon Sri Lanka photos women

Interestingly, because Luke portrayed the people of Afghanistan in a way that celebrated their lives, however poor (but timeless) he is now persona non grata and can't get further shows of his work. Portraying Muslims as anything but "terrorists" in the US -- given the ignorance of most Americans -- does not get him a bid these days. But Leica people, take a look at some great work and commentary.
