His intention was to demonstrate to the likes of Canon and Nikon that there was genuine interest in a digital rangefinder alternative. I suppose we will never see a digital rangefinder camera from Canon or Nikon (or Zeiss for that matter).

We might soon see a FF mirrorless electronic viewfinder digital camera from them, though.

Who knows if there will also be a version with microprisms in the 24X36mm (high ISO) chip's corners, so that present M lenses of less than 50mm could also be accomodated? The M9's chip is second to none at low ISO, but (not only) journalists ask for better performance in low light.

In due respect for the present model, it is a M8 chip, which is on the market since the end of 2006, with a 1.3x bigger diagonal and no need for UR/UV filters in a cam with no video, with R&D focussed on the S2.

At the same time Nikon has a superior product to their rival (who insists on video leadership) and has started a price war with ünprecedented offers to bulk buyers*, in order to get back what they had in the analog era: supremacy in the photo-news sector. They want you to see mainly N-cams, when you watch the evening news and black lenses in TV transmissions of sports events. It was already visible in Vancouver and it looks like it will get further results. Canicon have 6-digit ISO and they continue research.

At the same time it could be, that customers queuing up for a 6k$ cam body did not go unnoticed.

For good measure I just got a M-CronA 90mm and already have a Apo-Telyt 135mm also second hand, though I never use these focal lengths on an M.

*Well, what else would work?

A clear study cohort makes it hard d to misinterpret:

The Taxis in our country.

Suppose there was a brand dominating the market untill 12-15 years ago. And now they want back to the top. What would make the garages consider changing their fleets with the whole logistics systems of accessories? Quality, service and (not only in 2010) the bulk price.

Zaphira tried for a couple of years. All that happened was that the (good star's) E-models got more reliable and the cabbies got heavy discounts on them. Had knee surgery 2 years ago, so many told me the same during 10 minutes drive.

Probably works similarly in most branches of most markets, I'm no economist, this is just empiric, but this (taxis in Germany) is a large one, open to everyone's observation. Just like journalists' photo cameras on TV news and sports events.

And I repeat I do beleive that market is asking for a better RF, I would consider returning to RF for the reason I've always said, weight, discretion, size etc. But the RF would need to be more versatile and higher image quality at high ISO. (at 160 ISO it is hard to beat a Leica M8/M9 with a Leica lense, not hard, I'd say impossible, but I usually work over 2500 ISO)

I'd says that thanks to my experience with M8, I only use prime lenses, my longuest is 85mm, I use a single central AF spot and reframe, singleshot mode etc.

OK--whatever :)

I have to wonder, though, why the heck you'd use a 5d2 with Canon's fast L primes and shoot "usually" over ISO 2500. You lose DR with that system, too, you know. You need to stop 'em down to get them to focus or something? Just kidding, but I came from Canon too :)

One day the G15 will arrive and it will do 99% of what a low-end RF user wants, including HCB mode :) Don't know about interchangeable lenses, and "the box" won't be metal, or water-resistant, but it'll be autofocus, high ISO with plenty of resolution and an OK optical viewfinder. Won't be an M, though.

In Spain weddings are 90% of the time at night time, I prefer to have noise than flash, but M9 noise at 2500 ISO is far higher than the 5D MKII at 5000 ISO. That's my point.

As I said, cameras are tools, just tools whether they are called Leica, Canon, Nikon or Smith.

I wish I could get the perfect tool, but it does not exist so I use the one that answer my needs better. I imagine you do the same thing.

All well and good, but why do you feel the need be in this forum to rub our faces with your decision? Do you somehow feel insecure or maybe it's an ego thing, or you want to get back at Leica users for Leica somehow letting you down?

Your lack of sensitivity says much more about you then your choice of tools.

not at all, I just popped in after months without checking this site, I came because I thought there would be some reaction about Jeff's joke. As you can see I've been months without stepping in and I have ONLY written in this thread about Jeff's joke, if I felt as you say I'd writting all over the place.

I'll be back for the M10 rumors, M10 prayers, M10 announcement, M10 launch, M10 comments... and maybe I'll be back with Leica, who knows????

For now I am leaving again. Have a nice year and enjoy the tool you have chosen as best tool for you, I'll do the same.

Bye. Eric

Eric,

You RECENTLY bought THREE 5D2 bodies with lenses of 85mm and shorter for night shots (=weddings), so high ISO is of paramount importance?

Could have gotten ONE 3Ds with a 24-70mm instead.

The chip is much more than 2 f:stops better than the 5D2 so you don't need f:1.4 lenses. The 3Ds autofocus is absolutely superior to the 5D2 not only at a quarter of the ambient light and with a 2.8versus a 1.4 lens.

And a Kowa + a Holga would still let you carry 3 cameras.

This just because you wanted to keep your old Leica buddies posted and you cherish feed-back as conditio sine qua non in fora.

BTW: I have a 5D2 for almost 18 months now and am happy using it just with a 24mmT&S2 and a 2/50 Macro Planar (imo the nearest thing to a 50LuxA). When they brought it out with practically an 1DsMk3 chip they had to incorporate an AF that sucks, but you know that.

The time working with with your Ms (your awful old cams, versus the new super gear of yours) made you accept focussing with the central point only, as you write, and recompose. Any 1D(s) or 3D(2D) shooter finds this laughable, but this way you can get any results with your 5D2s.

Cheers!

I tried the Nikon D3 before purshasing the 5D MKII and I did not like it. Too heavy for my taste and I compared to 5D MKII raw files sent by someone from this Leica forum, and the image looked better to me. Question of tastes.

24-70, I do not like zoom, they are less sharp, less luminous and I can walk back and forward anyway, so I prefer prime lenses.

Anyway, I came in to see what was going on about Jeff's joke not to have to explain my decision nor to read people telling how happy they are with their gear. Obviously if someone was not happy with what he has, he would be stupid to keep it... so I do assume that people here are happy M8/M9 users.

See you for the M10.

Bye.
