Joachim123 Posted March 24, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be in San Antonio Texas the first week of April and hope to see a large part of the area right up to Laredo Texas. The only question is should I take my R4(Many rodeos I presume) or my M6? Any thoughts comments.

cidereye Posted March 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 24, 2010 Wow, I am jealous as anything! I did this trip myself back in 2002, way before I indulged in all things Leica, and lugged around a couple of Nikon FA bodies, 50mm + short & medium zoom's. If I was going again I know what camera would be in my bag for sure and that would be my M2 & M8 without any hesitation whatsoever. Now, I never saw any rodeos myself but even then surely a 90mm would be OK? San Antonio is a great area, I remember standing for ages waiting to get the right shot of the front of the Alamo on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Make sure whatever you do that you don't miss out on Gruene just up the road on the way back to Austin (Austin of course is superb for live music!), beautiful small town kept just the way it was back in times past, Gruene hall is a superb place to stop for a beer and if you like country or Americana music you just never know who you might see there. The worst thing I ever did was leave my cameras in the car that afternoon as I was feeling most unwell, I regret that to this day. Gruene, Texas - Gently resisting change since 1872 Gruene Hall Official Home Page I'm sure some US members will also have thoughts and views too but whatever you decide to take - have a great time, you will love it! surfer dude Posted March 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 24, 2010 My son and I went last May / June to Texas and a lot of the Southwest and carried between us and M camera, an R system, a Nikon film system and a 4X5 system with tripod. This was from Australia. It was a hassle at times but totally worth it. If you are hiring a car and staying at hotels, it is not too much trouble, What is really frustrating is wishing you had the gear when you don't. If the trip is about photography (ours was, largely) then you are crazy not to take the gear you think you'd like to use and can handle relatively comfortably. If photography is but a small part of your trip, obviously you scale back. In that case I'd take an M camera and maybe three lenses - that makes a pretty unbeatable travel kit. Joachim123 Posted March 24, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted March 24, 2010 Photography is really the only purpose for my trip. The problem is that I am taking Amrak(Train) from Buffalo New York(Dont like flying) and I will be limited to what I can take with me. However, once in San Antonio I will be renting a car so mobility will not be a problem. I really would like to take two cameras but it would be too much to lug around. Thats why I was asking which would be more appropriate?
