BTW Richard, how are you posting your images onto this site? For example, the thai monk shot, how big was the file?

I use a (free) Photobucket account for years. You upload images there and use the provided links for use on fora and such. Simple & hassle free imo... :)

I tried Flickr too. I guess I'm the only one but for some reason I don't get along with it.

Please consider others and stick to the forum rules with regards to file sizes, even if linking through from external sources. especially since this sub-section of the forum seems to like having very long threads full of photographs.

Also bear in mind that many external hosts are banned by firewalls and therefore some people cannot see your photos at all. I cannot see any of yours, for example.

Thank you.

Really?... I didn't know that Andy. My understanding is/was that on most fora external host are the preferred - often even the only - way to post images as it saves storage & bandwidth...

Is it forbidden to post a link to services like Flickr and Photobucket?

Richard.

The preferred way is by uploading to the forum to show your work. That way, every registered member can see them - non registered people cannot. Storage and bandwidth on the server isn't an issue - but it can be for users if you link to huge files... Links to Flickr etc are not banned (but they do break Flickr rules, for example)

Long threads full of photographs outside of the Photo section are not encouraged. The specialist sections are intended for technical discussions, queries and assistance on the individual cameras. Threads for showing photos are for the photo sub-sections. This keeps the technical sub-sections light and easy for everyone to use.

That's why I have placed instructions in all the photo sections as to how to upload.

This is one forum, with many parts. The X1 sub-section is just a small part of the whole.

(PS - I respond in blue when I am wearing my moderator hat, btw)

Andy - Point noted. I've alway intended this thread to be for the discussion of the X1 rather than a place to post its photos. But it has been confused with the other X1 Photography thread (which is populated with beautiful X1 pictures).

Perhaps this thread sound return to being more discussion based?

The X1 photo thread won't bite. And people will get a much better response to their photos if they're placed in their own threads in the appropriate Photo section.

I kinda see both sides of the coin in this case, on the one hand the X1 photos should be placed within the larger Leica photo community so there is more circulation and response, on the other hand it is far more convenient if the X1 photo thread is within the X1 forum so we need not leave the forum and everything is under one roof:cool:....hmmmm....

The X1 photo thread has had a permanent, sticky stub left here. You never have to venture out into the big wide world if you choose not to ;)

No one is forcing anyone to do anything that they don't want to do, but if you don't share photos more widely and interact with the rest of the forum, non X1 owners won't get to see the results, and you won't get to see what the other 99% of the forum members are doing, including meetings, competitions, charity books etc etc.

Agreed, just lazy probably...hee...hee unless there is a fast link (one click) to the X1 photos in the main forum (sorry to be so demanding:p)

that would require an application be written for the forum. I'm not sure if that forum software (i forgot the name) allows it, but generally speaking a website is not going to be granted file level access to an iDevice, only an application which has gone through apple testing to ensure no malicious activity would.

Andy while a strongly agree with your stance, there is one problem with the popular photo themes. Pictures quickly disappear from the current page and are rarely found again apart from diligent searches. While I do not wish to encourage extended picture threads outside the nominated picture theme threads, sometimes it is easier for newer members to find a relevant specialist camera thread and discover invaluable text, hints, tips and relevant photo illustrations. Flowing 'look-at-my-latest-picture' contributions are out-of-place there. I think you have the balance and content about right.

for those of us who live on our ipads - any chance of getting the ability to upload photos to the forum directly from the ipad?

How strange and unfortunate that we cannot upload to our albums via the iPad.

It get different versions of the upload page with Firefox (on Mac) and Safari (iPad). Yep, the choose file dialog is dead for the iPad page.

I'll consider it a challenge to do something about that on the iPad side. Maybe tell it to lie about its identity.

I hate it how Steve Jobs has locked up the iPad so much.

Maybe you should wait until v4 of the iPad software comes along in a few weeks. That might solve the problem.

I see no reason to hate Apple or Steve Jobs. Was the iPad ever sold to you as a fully functioned computer alternative? No. Was it sold as an adjunct to your main computer and a completely new paradigm in hand held computing? Yes.

If you want a laptop, buy a laptop.

Thank you for your support.

There is already a sticky X1 photo thread accessible from the top of this sub-forum. We don't need two.

It's possible they will allow file level access but I doubt it. Their stance for years has been, if you want specific features, write an app. This isn't new to the iPad, it's the same deal with the iPhone. Andy, that iPhone software that was integrated into the forum, does it allow file access? If not they would be the more likely to petition for an update.

Pico, identifying as a different browser isn't going to change anything, the operating system is the restrictive part of the equation. Apple has not, as of yet, ever allowed file level access to the Internet. You do have the choice of jail breaking (which is now legal) and testing what you can do.

On a side note, vie owned an iPad since day one. I am selling it on. I really hope they improve it for version two with more ram and less restrictions. It's not a bad device, it's a Jack of all trades and seriously master of none. I look forward to future revisions to make me open my wallet. In the interim I'll be happy to see the pending android tablets.

I wrote "I hate how Steve Jobs". I do not hate Steve Jobs. FWIW I knew the man, and met with him several times just before the Mac came out and I had one of the first Macs. I know he is brilliant, however I disagree with some of the decisions he has made which keeps the iPad so locked in.

The iPad was not sold to me. I was given a couple. I do R&D. It's part of my job. But I JUST got it and am now taking it apart, so to speak.

I have a laptop, too. Lots and lots of laptops. And desktops. Again, my job.

I own a little netbook, an asus N10, it's small light, has good battery life and this is what I use for viewing images on the road. I hook it up to my jailbroken iPhone and it connects to the internet, it has all the PC features if you should ever need them, it has a 6 cell battery with 6 hour life and is about half the price of an iPad.

Why iPad?
