Funny SD card issue with FW 1.116

I've got a Transcend Class 6 16gb, Sandisk Extreme III 16gb and a new 8gb Eye-FI Wi-fi card.

This issue only happens with the Eye-Fi card. It only happens on the M9 - the Eye-Fi card works fine on my Panasonic LX3 and Nikon 300s.

When the bottom of the M9 is off I put in the Eye-Fi card and then put the bottom cover back on.

When I turn on the camera I get an error message that there is no SD card in the camera. I cannot format the card via the menu or review images. The camera does not see it.

In playing with it I've found a work around. Not sure why this works, but it does.

I turn the camera on and then take off the bottom plate. The "bottom plate off" warning comes up.

I then hit the shutter release button halfway to make sure the camera is awake.

I then use a pencil to push in the little button by the battery so that the camera "thinks" that the bottom cover is on.

I then insert the SD card.

Then remove the pencil and put the cover on.

Now the M9 "sees" the card. I can format it, take photos, review them, etc.

The card is fine - works in all my other cameras.

Something is wrong with the way the M9 is seeing SD cards.

Looking over this forum there seem to be quite a few other threads of people having problems with the M9 seeing their SD cards after the FW upgrade.

Maybe others can try this "trick" until Leica comes up with 1.117.

I’m out on a limb here but could it be an issue with the bottom plate shielding the electromagnetic radiation from the WiFi card?

I don't think so.

The card just works as a normal card if there are no external networks. When inserted the M9 just doesn't see it.

After the goofy work-around, I put the bottom plate back on and all the wireless features of the card work perfectly. So the plate doesn't seem to be the issue.

Steve,

I encountered a similar situation of the camera not recognizing larger cards right after the firmware update. My method of remedying that is slightly different than yours though. See my post #15 of this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/119191-m9-fw-v1-116-available.html.

Weird. I have several of the 16gb Class 6 Transcend SD cards - my M9 has no problem with those - just the Eye-Fi.

Friends

I just had a similar quirk, albeit different Card Maker. Mine was with the "supported" Sandisk 8Gb SDHC 2. After an upload to my Mac, in Lightroom 2, my card was no longer recognized by the Camera. After trying to re-format it with the Mac Disc Utility, (No new Partitions placed) -- the Card came back as Fat 32, but no longer had a capacity of 8 Gb Nominal (actual 7.86 blah blah) But rather 2 Mb nominal; Anyway... I went to the SD Site, and downloaded the new Version of the Formatting software, written by Matsushita (panasonic), Here; End User License Agreement - SD Association. Opening the card in the Formatter, the Card read as 2Mb... This Fresh Image Formatter took forever and cleaned the card completely. Putting a new set of digs on the card, The card then read 8 Gb in my VM ware PC emulator. (the Formatting program does not run in Mac O.S. I Then returned the fresh Image SDHC to the M9, and the Camera saw it right away, but of course the Card was not readable. I formatted the Card for Leica, in the Camera. This was the longest Format I have ever endured with the M8, M8.2, or M9's. In any case after the format, and running FW 1.116, my camera and Card are happy, and operate correctly as an M Digital and with an 8 Gb nominal Card.

Hope this helps, even if this does not necessarily apply precisely to the issue.

Cheers

Max
