Corvi Posted March 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey Folks, I've got myself a Summicron 35 a month ago, and i started to notice an odd effect on my pictures. The lens drastically looses sharpness to the lower left edge and corner. Now my question .. is there a chance my cron is dealligned or deadjusted in some way ? or am i just expecting too much from that lens ? Here are some sample pictures. Pay attention to the textures getting noticabley unsharp on the lower left edge/corner. wizard Posted March 17, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 17, 2010 Welcome! We would need to know which version of the Summicron 35 you are referring to. The very first version did show a significant drop in performance towards the edges at full aperture, and even the version IV is still noticeably softer towards the edges at f2. The first shot was on f/8, and its still noticeable less sharp. Other strange thing is, that is gets worse on the left side, but its not nearly as bad on the right edge. wizard Posted March 17, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 17, 2010 Well, then the lens could indeed be decentered somehow. Although the camera might be the victim, too. Do you experience the same phenomenon with other lenses as well? Then the lens mounting flange could be off a little. If the problem occurs only with one lens, then I'd say the lens is to blame. I've used various lenses on my M6, like the 50mm Elmarit, the 90 Summicron and various Voigtländer and russian M39 lenses, and all where fine. Gonna get to the Leicashop next week and ask them for an M9 body to try the lens on that one. marcusperkins Posted March 18, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2010 Corvi, I'm assuming you are scanning your negatives, so it makes sense to eliminate the scanner first. View the negative on a high powered loop, or under a microscope to see if the problem is actually on the negative. Scanners are not always able to hold the film completely flat, resulting in fuzzy corners. Also, lenses are rarely perfect, and do loose some quality in the corners, sometimes just one or two corners. It is nevertheless annoying, and a quick check on an M9 would be a good idea too. It need not be some thing badly wrong, e.g. debris on a element locating surface could skew an element. Having a lens stripped is not cheap. I'd sent it to Will van Manen service and the problem's gone. By the nature of the lens, corners are fuzzy at f/2, but from f/4 the whole field is pretty balanced. I think my DR Cron is decentered too but the problem is much more pronounceable with it and the whole left edge is unsharp. Xmas Posted May 16, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 16, 2010 You ned to send the lens with a negative, describe the specific symptoms and request re-centering, the technician, can loupe the negative.
