One can start a new record sub root folder by resetting the image numbering from menu. I did that. I see through the USB mass storage, under the main ROOT folder DCIM that I got now two sub root folders: 100Leica and 101Leica. I had taken about 30 photos under 100Leica folder before resetting image numbering, now that I have created a new sub root folder, i.e. 101Leica all my subsequent photos are being defaulted in 101Leica sub root folder. How to continue to take new photos and save them in the first original subroot folder 100Leica? My intention is create multiple sub root folders, i.e. 100Leica, 101Leica, 102 Leica...so that I can group my photos as I am taking them: family, locations, industrial, reportage, etc...I did not find anything in the Owner's manual. Does the current firmware capable of this? Any hint out there (any hint from M9/S2 users?)....please?

I have the same problem. I took some photos with the built-in memory and then fired some more on the memory card. Thus, it has a few files in 100LEICA and a whole lot in 101LEICA. If I rename the photos in 101LEICA to follow 100LEICA, any way to get the photos to continue numbering?

Otherwise, if you ever use the built-in memory, won't this throw off your numbering?

You can't do that while taking photos. The camera will always use the higher folder number. There is no way to select which folder and numbering the camera uses on the fly.

If the X1 is anything like the M8 you can make the camera use the lower folder number by deleting everything from the card, IE format it in the camera, take one image. Put the card in a card reader and rename both the folder and the image, from 101LEICA to 100LEICA and the image from L101xxxx to L100xxxx. Then place that card back in the camera and REVIEW that image. Take one more image and it should be named/numbered consecutively from that image and folder you change the name and number on.

Other then that as Andy has pointed out you will need to do all your sorting in some type of image management program.

Thanks everyone for the help. While I do use a DAM, I also keep a second (backup) copy of all my memory card contents (since nowadays I have not just photos, but depending on the camera, video, audio, and misc data files that my DAM may not utilize yet). Hard drives are cheap. Why not keep a "raw" backup and a DAM-based backup?

I did try Shootist's idea, but it did not work. It just remembered what number I was last at and created a new folder for 101LEICA and continued numbering accordingly.

Here is what worked for me:

1. Rename the misnumbered images from L101XXXX to L100XXXX.

2. Reformat the SD card.

3. Reset file numbering (this resets the first image to L1000001).

4. Take the SD card out and copy the images from you computer into 100LEICA on the SD card.

5. Take a photo.

6. When you hit the Play button, you should see that it has continued numbering in the L100XXXX sequence

I noticed that after I took the photo it took a few seconds longer to save the image. I think what was happening is that as it loaded the photo out of the buffer and onto the SD card, it noticed that L1000001 was taken and so was the next number, etc.. so it kept going until it found the next available number.

Think this is pretty much how most digital cameras work these days. Hope this helps others out there.

FYI: My Sony is probably the worst offender of this numbering thing. It sorts by some sort of weird combination of date, folder, and file number. Always makes me hunt around for my images!
