I am an amateur photographer. Was wondering if the experts in this forum can shed some light on all the different functions.

1. Stablization on. What is the purpose of this function. For example I want to take a photo of a baby that cannot sit still. Should I turn this on? Or should I use a faster shutter speed? Or should I use a higher ISO? Or should I use 11 point focus H function?

2. Under Auto ISO Settings, slowest speed 1/30 this is the default, should I just leave it there?

3.Continuous High or low, what does this mean?

4. Flash sync, start of exposure.... what is this?

5. Flash slow sync?

Many thanks

I'm no expert :), but I think I can provide a few quick comments.

1. Stablization on. What is the purpose of this function. For example I want to take a photo of a baby that cannot sit still. Should I turn this on? Or should I use a faster shutter speed? Or should I use a higher ISO? Or should I use 11 point focus H function?

Stabilization stabilizes from the camera's point of view, not the subject, so if the subject is moving around, it's of no help. Thus, for a still subject, you can shoot at lower ISO (less graininess) and reduce chance of unwanted blur from camera shake. For the baby, try a faster shutter speed if you can (at least 1/60). You may need to use a higher ISO. 11-point focus H function is unrelated. Try several shots with different ISO's and shutter speeds to get a "feel" for the amount of blur vs graininess that you desire in your shot.

2. Under Auto ISO Settings, slowest speed 1/30 this is the default, should I just leave it there?

Depends upon how much "blur" you would like to see in your photos. Use lower values (meaning the shutter is open longer - e.g. 1/15 vs 1/60) for more blur.

3.Continuous High or low, what does this mean?

This has to do with how quickly the camera takes pictures in a row when the shutter release is pressed and held down - either 2 or 3 frames per second.

4. Flash sync, start of exposure.... what is this?

Beginning of curtain would give the appearance of a car's taillights preceding the car in a night shot, while end of curtain would show the care and taillight trails where you would expect them to be.

5. Flash slow sync?

Use flash slow sync for when you want the subject *and* the background properly exposed. Just using regular flash will often leave the background black.

Many thanks

Hope that helps a bit.
