I own a Leica D-Lux 4. I am very pleased with it and I get very good results.

Recently, I bought an external Flash CF 22, thinking that I could get better pictures in dark circumstances with this than with the internal flash.

With or without the internal flash I get much better results than with the external flash.

Am I doing something wrong or has anybody else experienced the same thing I did?

The money I paid for the CF 22 was money thrown away. . .

No, I have not used Leica CF22 but instead I have had great success with Metz mecablitz 28 CS-2 Digital Slave Flash, which is a universal type of flash suitable for point & shooters with multi or pre-flash features such as is the case of dLux4 and the new X1. Don't believe none of the so called Leica electronic strobes are made by Leica, but rather re-branding by other manufacturers, so why pay the gouged mark up of Leica pricing? Besides, Metz is a known reputable maker of extremely high quality strobe lights. German technology, but products are not made in Germany though. There are adjustments in the metz flash that will customize the settings in such way that it will tailor precisely to the internal characteristics of the dLux 4 flash unit. It is much cheaper, and you will get superb quality too. Remember the best you can do is a fill in effect at best.Good luck.

I have the DL-4 and the CF 22. and get good results. But, I am at a loss to suggest what, if anything, that you might be doing wrong. I typically set the Mode to TTL on mine and have the diffuser on the flash. The CF 22 is really not a very powerful flash, but I'm sure that is not your problem since you say the internal flash gives you better results.

Welcome to the forum!

How do you use the flash? How do you set the camera differently when using it than when not? I don't use a flash with the Digilux 4, but there sure are a lot of menus to adjust on it. ;)

Why don't you post a couple shots, one with the built-in flash and one with the CF 22. Maybe a picture or two can help us figure out what's up!
