I went along to get quotes from UPS and Fedex today,for a relatively small package (about 20cm wide, 17cm high and 26cm deep) and the amounts quoted seemed incredibly disproportionate to me: around 250 euros for the fastest service, but still about 160 euros for the cheapest and slowest service. Does this reflect the normal sorts of costs for shipping to the Far East? Did the guy giving me the quotes totally mess-up? Has anyone tried normal postage from Europe to Singapore or similar, and if so, what was the experience? I'm seriously shocked by courier costs, anyway. I guess that 70 or 80 euros inside Europe should've alerted me to the probable price halfway around the world, but somehow under 100 euros to have something valuable delivered still seems reasonable. But shipping a small lens for 250 euros... I was speechless. ADDITION: well I dug out some old invoices from Robert White, Ffordes and Schouten and others, and I see that even up to 120 euros or so isn't unusual for things that I've had shipped to me - and that's from one European country to another. So this teaches me two things: (1) I have selective amnesia about how much I've paid or things in the past (this is probably in order to be able to lie convincingly to my partner) (2) Couriers cost a lot of money - everywhere. mby Posted March 11, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 11, 2010 Actually snail mail ain't that cheap either; when living in Singapore some years ago, we sent packages to Europe that way and it wasn't a bargain either; you might want to check locally to have a benchmark. stunsworth Posted March 11, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2010 In the UK I've shipped using the standard mail service but with insurance and a signed for delivery. It was a lot less than using someone like DHL. I would strongly advise insurance and signed for, I may have been unlucky, but as an eBay seller every parcel I had a problem with - buyer never received the item or he said it was damaged - was with parcels sent to SE Asia. Must say that within the EU I've had slightly more problems with items that were couriered to me, than with normally posted items. In one case, UPS practically destroyed a box in which a camera was overnighted to me. I'll definitely choose recorded delivery - and I'll try to insure (sometimes difficult for used items).
