Printmaker Posted March 11, 2010 Share #21 Posted March 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I appreciate the input very much! I've been using the loaner 35mm Summarit for 2 weeks now and with no disrespect to those that favor the 35mm size, I just haven't found that lens to be one I'd consider for my two lens kit. Keep in mind that like many of you I toted a luggage case full of SLR bodies and lenses for nearly 30 years. I also found that I used two of the 7 or 8 lenses 90% of the time on my SLR, so given the cost associated with M lenses, and what I've learned in my aging, I want to keep my M8.2 kit to two lenses. I'm starting to lean towards the 24mm & 50mm kit. And I really am thinking on saving for the 24mm Elmarit instead of buying the Elmar. Of course, all this may change in the next few days as I'm returning the loaner 35mm and getting a loaner 75mm Summarit today! It's possible that I'll really like the 75mm length and change my kit to a 28mm and a 75mm kit. The 28 Elmarit ASPH was "the" lens designed for the M8. Combined with a 75 Cron and you have the classic minimalist M outfit. Me, I use a 21/35/90 outfit with the 35 being used 90% of the time. I never really was one for normal lenses but there were no 28 mm lenses available when I bought my M8. So I just decided to make using a normal lens back to basics discipline... kinda HCBesque. Now I find I enjoy shooting the 35 cron (IV) M8 combo. But I'll use the same 21/35/90 outfit with a M9 (when I make the move). Most of the time it will be just 35/90. ezc203 Posted March 12, 2010 Share #22 Posted March 12, 2010 24mm sucks with glasses on the M8. Only if you actually use the viewfinder to frame your shots
Sailronin Posted March 12, 2010 Share #23 Posted March 12, 2010 Interesting thread. I initially went with 24mm Elmar; 50mm Summicron and 90mm Summicron to stay close to double the focal length with each change. Later added a 15mm CV for a true wide angle as the 24 is equiv. to 32mm in full frame coverage. I've found that the 24mm is my "walking around" lens at 32mm equiv just as many film Leica users keep the 35mm as most used focal length. Just my $0.02 worth Dave

August_West Posted March 13, 2010 Author Share #25 Posted March 13, 2010 Mass confusion now in my brain! In just 24 hours time I have really fallen for the 75 Summarit. Now starting to wonder if the 28mm/75mm kit would work fine for me, although I think I'd always long for a 50mm 'lux or 'cron. So far though I'm amazed at what the "budget" Leica 75mm is capable of, and it just looks sooo good on the black M8.2! I certainly didn't have anywhere near this type of admiration for the 35 Summarit. Starting to understand what you all say about the lens buying addiction. Hopefully before too long I'l be good enough at Capture One to post some examples here, but for now my fragile ego couldn't take the punishment. ezc203 Posted March 14, 2010 Share #26 Posted March 14, 2010 Why wait? I'd say go for it! Post some photos. Its really not about getting praise for the photos you take, but about improving. The best way to do so is letting other (unbiased) people critique it and for the most part, people are this forum are quite friendly and kind with their words, so no need to fret If you don't believe be, just go check out some of my earlier threads. Those photos were god awful, but the forum members who commented were all very encouraging and made me want to get better.
