pelagia Posted March 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Disclaimer 1. Yes, I know this topic has been already killed. Disclaimer 2. Yes, I come from Leica M6 and Epson RD1. Now that I have used M9 for 3 months I can say what is my main and only problem while shooting. It is the motorised cocking and its sound. I usually photograph people, and often in the silent situations (meetings, receptions etc). Sadly, I attract attention with sound. Lately here it was discussed which tape to use to become invisible. But which earplugs to use to become inaudible? I use the discreet mode, it helps somehow. Therefore, I want the mechanical cocking. I do not think it is too nostalgic, or too much step backward. It is even somewhat a "green" approach! I do not need electric toothbrush, why should I need electric cocking? Mechanical lever has its clear advantages: a. silent b. better grip on this old-fashioned body c. LESS BATTERY USAGE Tom
Advertisement Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Hi pelagia, Take a look here Leica M9M (M for 'mechanical'). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lars_bergquist Posted March 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2010 (a) If you have put our M9 on 'discreet', you know that the release and the cocking sounds are two very different things. The release sound comes from the use of a metal high speed shutter. You will have to live with it, because the classical cloth shutter cannot be fitted into the camera anymore (and you probably wouldn't want to live with it in any case). The cocking sound is no more obtrusive. Hand your camera over to a friend and have him release the shutter. You will find that in front of the camera and a meter or so away -- as distinct from with your right ear practically pressed against the camera back -- the noise is not in any way alarming. -- The question how alarming YOU are in the eyes or ears of the public, is answered not by taping over lettering or red circles, or choosing a different camera finish, or trying to silence the camera. You can be the most alarming object around, and you usually are. Behave normally, don't make a spectacle of yourself, use a non-intimidating camera like the M, and keep a friendly face ready to show your fellow beings, and you will not be treated as a threat. ( Agreed. A less clumsy solution than the Leica Grip M would be a boon for people who use the camera 'naked'. A compact optional plastic finger grip screwed into two bushings would be a good solution. I use a Crescenzi half-case with the little finger bulge only, that works well. It would not be ideal for someone with small hands however. © A larger battery cannot be fitted into the envelope, and no new firmware will offer radical improvement. In balmy conditions, carrying an extra battery is no great imposition. In cold weather, a larger battery compartment to take the place of the baseplate would be fine, I have been agitating for this for some time, but ears are deaf in Solms. The market niche is probably too small for an outside supplier to step into. snaggs Posted March 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 10, 2010 I would like a mechanical M9 as well, with no LCD and a mechanical ISO setting wheel Any camera settings could be set whilst tethered to a computer. Daniel.

Lars, I am delighted that you know me so well... © A larger battery cannot be fitted into the envelope, Here you misunderstood me. I meant that the battery power would not be used (spoiled?) to re-cock the shutter in case of manual lever. Tack! Tom
