Leica Road Show

As an M-9 owner and being new to Leica and rangefinders I attended the 5/12/2010 M-event in Philadelphia I was very disappointed. Here are some of my comments at the time:

“Because of the great reviews on this site I booked a room and drove 5-hours to attend the Philadelphia Road Show… For those wanting to try an M9 or test some new lenses I am sure it was well worth the time… Being new to Leica, my goal was to learn more about the M9 and its use from an experienced user of this system. Unfortunately the presentation was very rushed and truncated because of the instructor’s flight schedule to get to the next city. He also did not seem to be fully versed on all of the M9’s functions and features. Not the kind of valuable information and depth others have reported. Thankfully after the instructor left early the guest professional photographer did a good job and had tips about shooting with a Leica (not the M9) and workflow and we got to see many of his great Leica images. I am glad I went, but was disappointed with the quality and content of the M9 portion of the presentation, not what I expected from Leica.”

I hope they have improved the quality of the instruction and content. When I saw the new round of Road Shows I assumed it was just more of the same. I hope I am wrong.

Strike all below. Didn't look at the date of the original post.

No wonder I could find a link to the 4/29 event. That was 6+ months ago.

Well Bill not sure where you are seeing this as I have browsed all of the Leica site and find nothing for anything in 2011, as you say 4/29 that must be in 2011.

Could you post a link to this workshop/Road Show

I am going to the M9 workshop next weekend and it cost me $149 but I do get a voucher for the $149.

Per the Leica site.

Cost is $149 and includes a $149 voucher that can be used toward the purchase of a Leica Serial numbered M-product. Limited to 20 participants.

My only complaint is why is the voucher restricted to only the M line. I have all the M stuff I need.

Leica always used to hold events to generate interest. I have been to a few.

Walther Benser was one of the first. Then there was one in the USA 1960 to 1990 whose name escapes me for the moment. (Click enter and it pops right back back- Hoyne). Fred Maroon put on a wonderful presentation with his life`s work around 1990.

I actually knew and saw the Leica rep in the 1980`s. He helped me with a few problems.

Then the cost accountants and penny pinchers took control. and all the customer contact went away. Then the customers. Then the business. So to keep it alive, they raised prices to an astromonical level loosing more customers in the process.

Well maybe it is a small step forward.

Well, it seems at best a bit of a stretch - I've no plans on going and certainly not for the cost.

Leica came into my place of part-time employ (we sold their Sport-Optics) and yes, I understand there is a difference. But they didn't really present anything that someone couldn't learn on their own, or that wasn't available elsewhere - and this was for the sales staff. They used show new product at the bigger camera shops during 'Photo-Weekends' and that was for free.

It's good of them to offer a voucher, etc., but then that fact just illustrates it's more about Leica getting a sale, does it not? Which is fine really, but I've another idea - why don't they offer vouchers for R lens users towards an M9? Or an M lens?
