DonQuijote Posted April 7, 2007 Share #21  Posted April 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi John,  Great photo. I have the Leica Digilux-3 and a Dlux-2. I am still getting to know the D3. I am suprised that people do not compare apples with apples - i.e. a 7.5MP DSLR with a >10MP DSLR. Why not compare a 7MP Canon with the D3 ?  In my view where the D3 is a very strong is the built quality and end-user experience - the tactile experience of using the aperture ring on the lens, the solid feel and the precision of the design. Plus I do like the look of the camera it looks stylish, timelessly elegant when compared to most plastic boxes (sorry I do not wish to offend - just my view). I love my Dlux-2 (100/200 ISO only), too. I am sure that technically there are cameras that are more advanced, but the D3 certainly meets all of my needs. I will be getting the LEICA D VARIO-ELMAR 14-150mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH./ MEGA O.I.S when it comes to NZ plus a decent lens for Macros. Attached are photos I took in my garden all ISO 100 - I was concerned about the degree of sharpness plus DOF - still think this could be improved. Maybe RAW and post-processing. I like the tonality of Leica photos...  Enjoy your D3. Regards, Mike  50kb images drastically reduced in size due to upload limits. designdog Posted April 7, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted April 7, 2007 Perhaps I can contribute to this discussion, as I have a Canon 20D with several L lenses, a Digilux 2 and a L1. The L1 is the camera I prefer to use. Â I won't comment on the Digilux 2, as that has recently been well documented here. My favorite camera after my (sadly) now departed M film cameras. Â The L1, as a contributer here states, is a joy to use from a tactile experience. Switching back to my 20D, the first thing I do is look to the back of the camera for the excellent info screen, which is not there. Then of course I miss the aperture ring, as I almost always shoot in aperture mode. Â The Leica kit lens is every bit as good as my 24-70 f2.8L, but I prefer to use my newly acquired Contax 28, 50, and 85mm lenses, and manual focus. These rival the best of the Leica lenses, and you are focusing manually on rangefinders, aren't you? Â (Note: just for fun I put the 28mm f2.8 on my 20D - with an adapter. While the viewfinder made focusing marginally easier, the lens looked out of place - the entire metaphor was wrong.) Â The L1/D3 is a strange camera. Part Panasonic, part Olympus, part Leica. Not your everyday DSLR, to be sure. Â I am looking forward to the next model, which I hope will have a 10mp sensor and in-camera anti-shake! terrycioni Posted April 7, 2007 Share #23  Posted April 7, 2007 Greetings,  I didn't spend any time playing with the D3 at the local Circuit City or sell any Canon gear to purchase it. As has been pointed out if we had listened to the FUD when the D2 arrived - well we would have missed an excellent camera.  As for the kit lens being a Panasonic - agreed - but designed and spec'd by Leica. Not a lot different than all those lenses being made in China, etc. The lens is at least made in Japan and frankly is a stunning performer considering it is a so called 'kit' lens.  So enjoy the D3 it is a keeper, albeit big when compared to the M8.  The cat picture was shot with an old manual focus Pentax 50mm F1.2 (Gandy PK 4/3 adapter). I used the grain filter in PhotoShop as well as adding some corner vignetting on the cat. All at 400 ISO.  Cheers. Terry Welcome, dear visitor! digibob Posted April 8, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted April 8, 2007 differences differences D3>L1/ Having recently dropped my D3 into a wee saltwater puddle on a rocky surface,i slipped. The D3 went into shock and had to be shipped out to Germany for repairs. The point is , the guarantee covered this accident. Not sure if the panasonic guarantee is so generous ? So theres a + for getting the little red spot camera. So by my reckoning i have got value with my purchase. I was enjoying the experience of using the D3,have my doubts about the longevity of the rubbery flaps ,was suprised that part of the body is of a plastic material?.The image quality seems superior to the VLux1(which i haven"t dropped yet!) cheers rob
Riley Posted April 8, 2007 Share #25 Â Posted April 8, 2007 certainly the warrantee is worth having, 3 years against the (1 year ? 6 months ?) Panasonic warrantee.
spylaw4 Posted April 8, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted April 8, 2007 The guarantee is certainly generous - but against that must be weighed the higher purchase cost and lack of availability of discount prices. AFAIK the Pana warranty is 12 months. How many repairs by Panasonic would be needed to offset the extra cost?
hpu Posted April 8, 2007 Share #27 Â Posted April 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hurrah! Got at last my Digilux 3 :D . Have played around in the past with Oly and Nikon, all analogue. As a P&S I have now for approx 2 years a Fuji 810. This more to learn about the digital future. But this machine is to me another piece of "cake". Found it rather easy to go around in the menus. Holds good in the hand.
Atlasman Posted April 8, 2007 Share #28 Â Posted April 8, 2007 And the Olympus pro line of 4/3's lenses can match anything Canon. That's what sweet about this camera; you have your choice of Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma, and soon to be, I hope, Leica lenses. Â I've just recently purchased an L1 because I wanted an open system and not have to look to a single vendor for bodies and lenses. (I have a Canon 5D and 20D with a collection of L glass.) NickR Posted April 8, 2007 Share #29  Posted April 8, 2007 Along those lines, I've found the Sigma 30/1.4 to be a nice lens. I've used a SM Pentax 50/1.4 via adapter and have gotten similar results. The Pentax is MF, of course. However, in low light I have to manually focus the Sigma too. Ultimately, for the extra cost of the Sigma, all I'm getting is more accurate exposure metering. The pentax, like a lot of legacy lenses, doesn't meter correctly wide open. Welcome, dear visitor!
