markieh Posted March 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 3, 2010 Currently testing the X-1 and GF-1 together. The X-1 has superior image quality, especially in low light. Really very impressive and very M-8ish. Its a tad smaller than the GF-1 and slips into the breast pocket of a sport coat easily. Those are the pros. Its "Camera-ness" Is similar to the D-lux 4. Slow to turn on, slow to auto focus, slow to clear the screen after a shot. Slower to write Raw +jpeg to the chip, and does not have Raw only. Also has some fussy button pushing combinations to get certain features to work. The GF-1's design comes from its bigger brother. At low asa's, say around 500, is very comparable sometimes identical to the X-1. Mechanically It turns on fast, shoots as fast as you can push the button for a long time, and most of all it focus's very fast, in bright or low light, like shooting a good DSLR. It shots OK video too. My favorite feature is to put on the M adapter, and do some manual focus and f-stop shooting with my Leica lenses. Its kind of cool to turn your 50 mm 1.4 into a 100 mm 1.4 and see it on the LCD screen (which is brighter in daylight then the X1's ) The x-1 cost $2000 us the GF-1 $899 SO what to do, all that said, I'm keeping the X-1. It seems crazy, but at the end of the day I am a low light shooter. The images at 1000,1600 2500 asa are really amazing. I will live with the quirks, and hope for some firmware upgrade help in the future. Soon I hope!

nippa Posted March 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2010 I have a G1 and a GF-1 with 3 lenses. The 20mm f1.7 pancake lens is exceptional and even the 14-45 is a great performer. When I get my X1 I don't expect to see better results for much of the time. The X1's higher ISO performance is offset by the f1.7 aperture of the 20mm lumix lens and the resolution from RAW files matches my Sony DSLR. I expect the X1 to have a better dynamic range , be quieter in operation and fit my pocket more easily. I just wish that Leica had brought out a version of the GF-1 with Leica glass:)
Lukeit Posted March 9, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Guys I have a GF1 and I have been thinking about getting an X1 since one month... still uncertain as GF1 is truly great and doesn't have any of the so called shortcomings of the X1... but, but, but... Leica is Leica and so I am craving after it still uncertain on what to do. Should the X1 price be lower (consider that I am living in China and here an X1 in Shanghai is about 20000 RMB that means 2900USD!) I would definitely buy it, but being the difference so huge I'm still really not sure. Technically speaking I would like to know from you guys if according to your opinion does make any sense to have both GF1 and X1 .. I am trying to put aside the irrational Leica craving and get a more rational decision. Any good suggestion or help? Thanks! PS: here you can find some GF1 shots of mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukeit/
