gary16 Posted March 2, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted March 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got my X1 yesterday. We know that the autofocus on the X1 has some quirks. Here's mine. If I try to focus on an object that's just within the focus range (trying to photograph a watch face or coin closeup) in the AF Macro mode, I can hold the shutter halfway, and the X1 focuses and beeps. Then, even though the picture looks sharp on the screen, the camera then immediately defocuses (unfocuses?) slightly so that I have to either switch to manual focus or try, try again. This is repeatable every time. If I back off more then it will sometimes hold the focus. I have no issues when the item is further away. I'm obviously within the focus zone of the lens or it wouldn't look sharp when the camera beeps so why is it changing focus before I can finish taking the shot? pappde Posted March 2, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted March 2, 2010 I think your problem is that you try to focus below the minimal focusing distance.
wda Posted March 2, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted March 2, 2010 Your choice of focus mode also influences actual selection. I was photographing a group of snowdrops today, got the focus confirmation signal, shot but found that the nearest point of focus was beyond the nearest flowers. It is quite tricky, particularly when shooting low down. You soon get the feel for the nearest point of focus. Â Indoors, using a tripod, it is easier to get the desired point of focus, so long as it is at or beyond the minimum distance. Manual is probably more accurate, but is hardly practical outdoors in bright light.
Cirrus Posted March 2, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted March 2, 2010 Yes, you're trying to focus at less than the minimum distance. I've seen the same thing.
dkCambridgeshire Posted March 3, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted March 3, 2010 I have noticed the same anomaly. OK, so the X1 has a minimum focus distance ... but ... the fact that it will focus closer than that and show an apparently sharp preview image before going pout of focus, seems to suggest that the lens might be capable of going closer than the stipulated minimum? Could the minimum focus distance be improved with a firmware update? Â dunk
