ck1 Posted February 28, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Went to Warsaw, Poland with a Panasonic GF1 and came back with an LX1 Very impressed with file quality and handling. Yes - it is a little slow, but not a problem for me at all. All raw, processed in Lightroom 3 Beta - some are cropped - mostly only very minor levels adjustments Warsaw - a set on Flickr
Advertisement Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Hi ck1, Take a look here Leica X1 Gallery. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stnolan Posted February 28, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2010 ck1, Nice pics. Will you be doing a user comparison of these 2 cameras? It seems like in every post in every forum people are comparing the two but I have yet to see someone actually do a comparison. I have the GF1 and it is perfect for me, but of course I am interested in the X1 as well mainly for high ISO low noise and IQ. I'm sure many of us would love to see an actual user review comparing the two. Thanks Steve
ck1 Posted February 28, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted February 28, 2010 Steve (Meant X1 in first post, obviously!) I'll try and compare 2 later this week / next weekend At this stage: My instincts are that the file quality much better with X1 than GF1 (mine has the 20mm 1.7). Always felt a little noise present in GF1 even at low iso's. Not happy with GF1 after 400/800. X1 really is DSLR quality - fine up to 1600...3200 under bad lighting is ok as well. X1 lens is lovely, esp with wide aperture closeups. Still getting to grips with distortion, though. Not sure if LR3 corrects this in raw. The GF1 feels bulikier, is much heavier (and feels more solid as well) X1 is much easier to carry around due to shape / size / weight - fits really well in hand, but feels flimsier than GF1 X1's handling much better (because only a fraction of GF1 menus and options to wade through) X1 almost silent (a slight click can just be heard in a silent environment) - you can be invisible when taking pics - GF1 clacks loudly, giving game away. "Loosness" of dials a non issue for me - firmer than on my old CM. X1 is a picture taking delight - it feels like a camera rather than a computer. Only thing I'd want addressed in firmware is proper focusing scale on LCD. Not sure what Leica were thinking.... Otherwise manual focus works well. stnolan Posted February 28, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2010 Thanks so much for the follow up. There is so little on line about this comparison. What is your opinion on low light AF'ing? Thanks again. This is good info. I am a bit surprised by what I keep seeing as surprise vis vis apparent build quality. Looking forward to trying it when there is stock at dealers to demo. siangs Posted March 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2010 i really enjoy your pictures, i agree with you that X1 is better than any other point and shoot camera.
ck1 Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted March 1, 2010 Build quality is very good - the camera just feels light. After several years of hard use I doubt it will be as reliable as a Rolleiflex (or even working ?) - a shame that these cameras aren't as solid as previous generations. Low light af is not such a great problem. I took many inside a dim shop - provided you focus on contrasty area and recompose it didn't really register as an issue (I have turned af assist lamp off as too intrusive). Undoubtably the overall focusing and electronics are just not as "snappy" as GF1 but if you use the camera more in a contemplative way it is just fine. Also, manual focus implimentation also works well. I also took several pictures of people in street with prefocussing and is was fast enough. I have just noticed that the out of camera jpegs are really good - from the couple I've compared, better than LR3 conversions. Will have to investigate further. The burst mode is useful in low light - camera takes several pics, one after the other - one is more or less guaranteed to be sharp.
wda Posted March 1, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A really interesting set of pictures Whippet. I particularly liked the contra jour street scene - a real winner! The balloon lady would look even better had you been a metre or so nearer to her. A few seem in need of +1/3 or +2/3 EV correction, judging purely from you Flickr jpegs. But that is easily fixed. I am sure you will have more latitude when you master LR. LR3 is only a beta version at present.

Lukeit Posted March 8, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 8, 2010 CK1 thanks for the set, it seems though that quite few pics are not properly in focus... I understand street photo might be so, but as X1 is currently talked about for being not particularly good for street shooting, I was wondering how was your experience about it. Thanks Luke
ck1 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted March 9, 2010 Thanks Luke Most of the pics are (as far as I can see) focussed - what you may be seeing is blur from low shutter speed. Having used film Rolleiflexes, M7, mamiya 7's etc having any sort of autofocus is a godsend to me In the street I use manual focus at c.6 feet, 1600 iso and f5 ish. That catches most things I want. I don't really find the shutter lag a problem either. I also have a D700 and can appreciate the seduction of hyper fast focussing / shutter response. However there really is no comparison when wanting to be unobtrusive - the X1 will allow me to get candid shots the D700 never will. I'm firmly of the school of thought that if the subject matter of your pic is interesting no one will care if it's slightly out of focussed or blurred. Look at Bob Cappa for an extreme example of this. Previously, my fav camera for going out at night was a Ricoh GR1 loaded with 1600 Neopan. The X1 is better is every respect.
