Sinar goes back to Jenoptik ..?

But to back up a step--

Didn't we all think it was strange when Leica and Sinar announced the change in ownership at photokina? I certainly wondered what advantage it would offer Leica. The company has always shied away from building lenses in other mounts because they have a hard enough time filling their own lens orders. They've steered away from medium format for the same reason.

I hope the Hy6 is a hit for all the participants, but I'm not disappointed to see Leica out of the picture.

Help me on the wording "By rescinding from the contract...." To me this looks as if Jenoptik stepped back from the deal, even though they throw the blame on Leica.

And once again--Does anyone have clear information that Jenoptik was involved with M8 firmware? I've always seen that as speculation, but never seen confirmation.

When Leica had their M8 launch in Singapore, someone raised the question during the talk and Jenoptik was mentioned as the company by the German guy doing the presentation.

Great! Thanks, David. I had heard that Jenoptik was involved, but never heard the source.

Leica needs technology partners - Kodak, Jenoptik, Phase One - where the spirit of cooperation extends beyond the contractual detail. I'm sure Leica have a contract with Imacon to update the DMR firmware but it doesn't seem to be high on their agenda to get a new version out.

In my experience, you know if a commercial relationship is working and if you need to pull out the contract to check, it probably isn't.

I still don't understand why Leica doesn't try to set up a relationship with Canon based on the Leica R lenses for the full frame bodies. Canon's lens line up cries out for the expertise Leica has for below 35mm focal lengths. They wouldn't even have to be autofocus to start just simple electronics for focus confirmation and an EF mount base.

I am *certain* that Canon would reject such a thing. To my knowledge, even Tamron and Sigma reverse engineer the Canon protocols and their lenses often "break" with firmware updates from Canon. Canon doesn't need Leica (although Leica's lenses are clearly much better, in general). Canon is a large, successful company.

Canon's linup does not cry out for a $3800 35/1.4, nor even for a $2500 24/2.8. They simply won't sell. Leica does not have the expertise to build the 35mm Summilux to sell for $1500 so they would be unable to teach Canon anything of use to them. Besides, do you really believe that Canon does not already have the expertise necessary to build lenses of any level of quality desired? Although Canon's more modern manufacturing capabilities might enable them to build the equivalent of a Leica wide for less money than Leica can, the necessary tolerances, hand labor and iterative inspection would still make the price too high for Canon's market(or Nikons, or anybody else's).

If a Canon user must have something other than a Canon wide all he has to do is buy an adapter and a Leica or Zeiss lens so it's not as though the high end market is not being served already. Anything Canon could make on that market would truly be chump change for them.
