coz Posted February 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought an older MP and it's my first one so forgive me if this is a stupid question. On the slower shutter speeds (1/8, 1/4, 1/2 & 1) after the shutter closes there is a still a winding like noise. Is this normal? Thanks!

coz Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted February 17, 2010 I forgot to mention that when on B mode and I hold it for a second it makes no noise after I release. thanks
twittle Posted February 17, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 17, 2010 The winding sound in the sound of the clockwork mechanism--very normal. That mechanism is not used in B, hence no sound.
cheewai_m6 Posted February 17, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 17, 2010 you might also notice on shutter speeds 1/30 and 1/15 after the shutter closes, it makes a 'bouncing' type of noise.

IdeaDog Posted February 18, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 18, 2010 I hope you get to know and enjoy those shutter sounds (I'm thinking especially 1/15th and 1/30th). It's nice to use them as audio feedback for how the camera is set when you're shooting in the dark conditions that require those speeds.
cheewai_m6 Posted February 18, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) as odd as this may sound, but my favourite sound is at the speed of 1/60. i personally find this sound the smoothest and quietest. 1/1000 is a bit loud, and 1/30 has that winding sound after the shutter closes. 1/250 doesn't sound as smooth. 1/60 is that perfect 'thuck' but smooth and quiet. for me anyway. it's a bit sad to have a favourite shutter speed sound. Xmas Posted February 18, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 18, 2010 Yes it is a bit bsad having a favourite shutter speed. 1/15 is my favourite. I like the sound of the gears. If you are purchasing another M the ping pong at 1/15, is like the light on a BMW saying service me now, if it does not ping pong, factor the cost of a service in purchase. If you dont use the MP over the winter on 1st of each month fire the 1/15 20-30 times, that will keep it ok. Noel

The MP is one of the beautiful things that gets me through the winter. It's made for cold, and it's made for black and white, and it's made for portability, and... oh I'll quit. I finally got sucked into this thread.
