In one or two areas around the metal rim behind the front element is a series of randomly grouped, tiny white spots. A friend has suggested that these are places where the black finish has come away. Image quality is unaffected but, if these are specks of black that have come free, then where are they? - and will there be more? If they are composed of white dust instead, they will be removable by a repairer. But if they are indeed places where bare metal is showing through I think it would be virtually impossible to paint them out. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Xmas Posted February 15, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 15, 2010 Lots of lenses are full of black paint from the metal of the barrel or the glass peripheries. Having the lens stripped and repainted (or sharpied) would only be a photographic benefit if the missing paint area were detectably degrading the image. Look at the lens from the camera mount to see of you can see the missing paint white areas, if you cannot the effect is probably not on photographs either.
