thomsva Posted February 14, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted February 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) From a couple of pictures I have had the impression that the X1 does some sharpening also to dng files. Now I did some tests to see if there is any difference between different sharpening settings. I did not find any difference in the dng files. Then I took a closer look at one particular photo where I had seen the excess sharpening. My impression is, that the sharpening can happen when a part of the picture is severely overexposed. This is a crop from an out-of focus picture. In the background there is a window, and there is simply too much light for the sensor. The fact that the picture is out of focus makes the sharp edges look funny. Â My conclusion is, that the sharpening setting does not affect the dng files. This is correct according to my logic. Another conclusion is to avoid overexposure if there is a strong source of light in the picture.
Advertisement Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Hi thomsva, Take a look here X1 in camera sharpening affecting dng files?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted February 14, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted February 14, 2010 Thomas, Raw files are what they say: raw data collected from the sensor except for bit change. I am sure that only your jpeg files will pick up any in-camera processing which may include sharpening unless turned off via menu.
thomsva Posted February 14, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 14, 2010 Yes I think you are right. Only on the shot above I thought that it looked like sharpening, but I suppose it's only that the white part is blown out. Â I made another test with different exposures. The first pic is overexposed one step in camera, to get the exposure roughly right. The second pic is exposed at +-0 and adjusted in lightroom to get similar exposure as the first one. Then I adjusted the white balance for the first pic as auto white balance had given slightly different results. No other adjustments. Â The biggest difference is in colour reproduction. I don't see any signinficant difference in how the edges of the curtain or the bottle look against the window. On both pictures the upper part of the curtain is sharper against the window than the lower part. There are trees in the background on the lower part of the window, so that's where the difference comes from. Maybe this is normal behaviour and not due to any sharpening?
