Experimenting with ever-ready wrist lanyard

The X1 is is fairly lightweight at less than 400g complete with 35mm finder and IMO the neck strap is a bit of an overkill for such a small camera. Thus I decided to attach an existing wrist cord - actually from a Fuji compact - and the ergonomics of the combination are fine. I don't plan to dangle the camera ie hang it from the cord and let it swing about. The camera will be tucked into my palm with my fingers around the body and the cord around my wrist will provide additional security and prevent me dropping it.

However, having decided to use a wrist lanyard I thought the camera deserved a 'custom designed' jobbie so asked a friend in Finland who previously made me a paracord neckstrap if he could design and make a paracord wrist lanyard. Today he sent the pix of his prototype for evaluation which will be arriving in a few days time. I think it will suit the X1 quite well and I'll let you know how it is in actual use after trying it for a few days.

This morning received the custom made paracord wrist lanyard from Deano in Finland. I think it suits the camera well and it certainly feels right on my wrist and the cord, woven flat like a strap, feels fine in my hand. The split ring attaching the lanyard to the strap lug is maybe slightly too large but it can be changed. The sliding 'woggle' on the actual wrist cord has a button operated lock. I'm very pleased with it.

Dunk, this is interesting and rewarding for you. I share your view on the preference for a wrist strap. The supplied neck strap is far to taut; it needs to be more flexible. I am not sure it will ease much with usage.

I did not find the neck strap too taught myself ... but I prefer a wrist strap with a small camera.

hi there

allow me to intrude . . . the wrist strap title caught me.

 

for whatever it's worth, i use wrist straps on my D2 and LX-3, and much prefer them to neck strap.

 

i also carry the cameras in my palm with the strap being a safety belt. my little trick is that, as i am "right handed" i mount the straps on the left side and carry the camera in my left hand ... frees up my right hand for whatever all day.

 

this is not going to make your life a lot better , but you might find it good to try.

If you plan to use the X1 without an accessory viewfinder you may find a neck strap very useful for bracing the camera against your neck while framing your picture. I have found this takes care of most of the camera's propensity to wobble when held out in front of you. When (and if) I buy the X1 I will certainly be doing this myself. Most compacts do not give you the option.
