hello all,

My mp has been relatively well traveled over the last year and a half, and with focus on my 35 summicron beginning to stick, i think it is time for a clr. i am questioning whether or not i should send in the 50 too (works fine, though it has seen its share of dust outside).

how often do you send in your gear for a clean? i hear good things about leica service under the passport plan, but i am not exactly sure how it works... and am hesitant about sending in something in that isn't exactly 'broken.'

i am also currently living in paris, so the thought of being able to send the stuff home to germany definitely appeals to me.

Hi Doug;

Over decades I never had to send in any lens or body and I am still happy w/ the current performance both mechanically and optically. I do not treat them as a baby. However, I am cautious how they feel mechanically. Having said that, w/out the need of sending the lenses in I would not do so just because it's for free. I would rather prefer to have the lens mounted that to see it go to Solms.

Do you have a substituion for the 50 or 35? This would make a decision easier.

I don't catch your phrase about a sticky 35 'cron. Does it mean you require more amount of force to focus as it was before?

Uwe,

by 'sticking' i mean that the several times the focus becomes quite rough to move, as if it needs to be oiled. i take care of my equipment too, but have been doing a lot of work on farms and omnipresent dust is just something you can't avoid. i am not too interesting in going throught the process of actually shipping it off, but am wary about buildup giving me more problems down the road with the 50.

It will cost you around £100 for a CLA on a lens, but I can't believe it would need one after only 18 months.

Take it to your dealer and ask their opinion first. It may well get done under the Passport system, but it might be "fair wear and tear"

Thanks, I got the situation now.

Yes, I would send it off. You never know if the 'dust' becomes alive, some sort of resurrection. Dust coming from straw can carry this stuff along. Secondly, the 'dust' can be abrasive and can cause some further harm.

Thus I withdraw my previous statement and I would send both in. However, for your next asignment you catch dust again. :-(
