lazaruz, please define "Leica magic" in terms we can all understand.

That look In the image that can only have come from leica optics. Most of the images I have seen online could have been produced by any digicam-yes there are some outstanding images taken with the x1. But there are many more that I have seen taken my the m8/9 . I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT SUBJECT MATTER OR FRAMING OR FOR THAT MATTER EXPOSURE, because a baby/cat/flower image can be both ordinary and yet have that special quality. It is that magic I want when I buy a leica because my talent (if any) would be visible even if I was using a 1time throwaway kodak drugstore digicam.

wda it is that special look the d2 images give.. I have owned the d2 (and own m film cameras) yes we have all taken bad photos...( I took a few bad ones yesterday at the botanical garden). But I took a few that could only have been taken with a leica. None of the canon dslr's I saw yesterday could have taken an image with that look we all know when we see .

I'd wager that you could never prove scientifically it exists. The vast differences in rendition WITHIN Leica lenses over the years says to me there is no "Leica Look", just progress over time...more contrast, better edges.

I'm not interested in scientific proof. Can beauty be quantified? Can you prove scientifically that one image is prettier more beautiful than another?of course not. I jut looking at my digital library trying to see what made my leica photos look different than others of similar subjects I found on flickr. I saw many that were technically better. Many that were composed better and a few that I enjoyed better than some of mine (I need to get better-at best I am an average photographer( I have. Few very good photos and many poor ones-but practice makes perfect. The big difference between leica lenses and others in my opinion is that in leica optics the subject looks alive almost 3dimensional. Most of the other images I looked at in flickr the subjects looked flat 2d dead...similar to most of the x1 images I have seen.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread so feel free to DM to continue this discussion.

You'll never see the original image quality with free Flickr or free Photobucket. After uploading they always seem less than they were.

Perhaps if I paid money to upgrade , my pics would stay the same but I'm not sure.

I just placed an order for an X1 in Canada. I was told I would get one near the end of June.

I cancelled my order with Adorama and will get a MP instead along with my M9 and GF1

Getting an X1 is like getting a good employee for your job shop. You can't wait for them to walk in - you have to go find them. Same with X1 - find someone who can get you the camera. I found David at Dale Photo in Florida.

I called David at Dale Photo (in Florida) and he's a super nice guy. They actually called me with a new shipment of X1s a month ago that I turned down ;) for some dumb reason. But I'm back on their waitlist and he said it should be 1-2 weeks and I should have one. Hopefully these new batches will have that new fast AF firmware update.. j/k. Give him a call if you're still looking for one in the US.

HOPEFULLY? If Leica was smart they should probably think about offering a FW update to all of the (current owners) first, before releasing any new X1's with the new FW, If you have waited this long, why not wait a little longer ,like until september 2010 Photokina, because you may want to purchase the X2?? Leica works in funny ways, very unpredictable.

of course a firmware update would be nice.. but luckily, I don't need really speed. I am thrilled about the compact size, IQ, and controls. I would wait for the X2, but if it's as great as it should be, then i'm sure the price will be even higher than the X1.. and probably out of my league.

I keep reading about possible x2 replacements.. I'd be shocked. They can't even manage to provide enough x1's, i doubt highly they are anywhere near the x2. I could possibly see an x1 with diff fixed focal length i guess.. but I wouldn't want it.
