AlbertoDeRoma Posted February 7, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I saw and I was a bit skeptical (even though I respect Steve's opinions and knowledge quite a bit). I tried it today and it worked REALLY well - at least with the dirt I had on my sensor. So, if you are concerned about wet cleaning a sensor like I am, this approach might not be perfect but, it worked for me and if it's good enough for Steve ... wattsie Posted February 7, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2010 Looks like he may just be blowing the dust around inside the camera! Try the Arctic Butterfly (visibledust.com). It is a dry method and I have found it to be simple and effective. A good light and loupe will assist in determining whether you are done or not. Islandmike Posted February 7, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 7, 2010 While I've found that a blower shifts some loose specks, the 'sticky' ones don't budge. I think some of these may be lubricant from the shutter on a quite new camera. Although I was pretty scared by the prospect of wet cleaning, I bought Photographic Solutions Eclipse and swabs - they guarantee that if their product damages the sensor, they'll pay (but not if you damage it by doing the job wrong by pressing too hard, levering spots off with a chisel, etc., etc!). The first time is the most frightening, then I discovered it was easy and extremely effective - needed 3 swabs initially, but one swab is normally sufficient. Guest WPalank Posted February 7, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2010 See this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/114998-m9-ultimate-sensor-cleaning-device.html The rocket blower has minimum effectiveness. It only works on stray hairs and fibers. Under a surgical operating microscope I was able to put the tip right next to a group of specks that I could visualize while I was using it and it didn't move them one iota. They didn't flinch. #2) I would not suggest keeping the shutter open via the Bulb Mode. It takes only one extra step to enter "Sensor cleaning" mode via the Menu as illustrated in the user manual. Snakepottery Posted February 7, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2010 I put my M8 (after jamming the shutter open with a nail) in the dishwasher and set it to heavy clean. Works a treat. Not a dust spec in sight. The body comes out nice an clean too. However for some strange reason, the pictures don't seem to be quite as good afterwards. I put it down to condensation in the camera so I then pop it in the oven at 180 deg for 10 mins. That seems to help. Andy
