X1 for 24 hours

It should be evident that Leica decided to trade on its brand name with this camera. They went for a cheap and slow processor, bottom of the line LCD, dials for settings that would be more suitable to a kid's toy than a serious tool with their inability to stay where placed, the same with the on-off-continuous switch and firmware that is not even half baked. Leica must not care about any of these issues because many forum members have complained about some of these items since the camera was announced and others have been highlighted by reviewers like Sean Reid and Luminous Landscape back in December and yet none have been addressed. If IQ were the only thing that counted the DP1 and DP2 would have been stellar success stories. Many owners that have them love the IQ but don't use the cameras because of their sluggish performance. However, since they don't have the cache of a Leica there is no reason to wear it around ones neck if one isn't going to use it.

This camera is the equivalent of the $200 jeans that are ripped and have holes in them that women foolishly buy to look stylish. I'm sure a few of you will look very stylish with your X1 hanging in its Gucci leather case like a man-purse.

In the PDN review he was trying to use the X1 in a low light setting using the camera's AF. Some of you may wonder why he wasn't using MF. Those that have owned an EP-1 know the answer. It is simply way too difficult to MF with an LCD that has low resolution and so much image noise that you cannot make out any details. In low light the image noise on the low resolution LCD will be horrendous. Therefore, you need the AF to help.

OK.....stuck a 35mm finder on it from my IIIf and the camera starts to 'feel' better....but the AF is not smooth and decisive...feels real slow but am getting more accustomed to it...

here one from earlier...the lens is excellent aas is IQ in my opinion...

but the camera sure need to grow on me more.....

barjohn you have made it clear numerous times you do not like this camera and take every opportunity to knock it, on this and another forum, maybe if you could get one yourself and spend the time taking pictures with it you might come to like it and start posting a few positive things.

As for looking flash wearing it around your neck in a Gucci leather case if you look at the camera its a compact and most people will put it in there pockets

My first post !

Anyhow, as far as the X1 is concerned I think the concept of big sensor on small camera is excellent. And the X1 sensor is much larger than Micro 4/3rds: ergo - great picture quality.

There is a real life test of the focus speed here: The Leica X1 Digital Camera Review | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS

I am tempted to take the plunge and buy an X1. For me, the only thing holding me back is the lens. I wish it was faster than f2.8..

Only if you want to be asked; "Is that a Leica in your pocket or are you just glad to see me!" :D:D

Hasn't this thread been done to death on this forum? Someone reports the x1 is slow, the haters come out and say it's just a lifestyle camera, a fashion accessory, the defenders say speed isn't everything, th IQ is great, the haters accuse the defenders of being in denial, blah blah blah ( repeat cycle)..

It's really tiresome to read. The original post was useful because it's another data point to use. The rest of the usual sniping isn't.

I've said all along, from when the full specs were made public, that IMHO the X1 appeared to be targeted directly at typical P&S camera owners (more fashionable types who prefer 'designer' brands and unique design) who wanted 'something better' but were not interested in a DSLR camera. You can be sure this camera will be all over the lifestyle magazines.

So, they are used to the LCD 'viewfinder' and the layout of the controls, the motorized lens etc., but can now experiment with different shutter speeds and apertures to learn some more about photography if they so choose, and serves Leica as a stepping stone to the M cameras or whatever next model they have up their sleeves.

It is what it is. If that doesn't suit your needs then find something else which does. Most of us on here are not the target market for the X1, which explains the negative opinions so far.

That is very simplistic.

Why settle for one when they can easily had accomplished both: a fashion item + a real good P&S. It is Leica we are talking about. And at this price? Well it's crazy!

Call me romantic, I still somehow believe, with a future f/w release they will fix shutter release. Provided it is so sucky as people call it to be

barjohn :D:D:D nice one

Going from the M4P to an M6 to an M7 to an M8 to an M8.2 to an M9 etc is seamless.. To go from a Nikon F4 to an F5 to a D1..D2,, D3 etc is also seamless..

My point is this. The X1 has some familiar connections to an M.. BUT its no M and it has issues to overcome.. Its focusing it would appear is the biggest issue but with practice and more importantly familiarity these become less of an issue.

I know people who love the look of Leica images but will never buy one because they just dont get the rangefinder mentality.

If the X1 didnt have the pricetag its got i suspect people wouldnt be complaining about its shortfalls..

The focus issue hasnt affected me and ive not lost anymore shots as a result of it than i would have normally when shooting with another camera..

Ive made a few comments about the review on the blog.. Personally i think Havik didnt really spend long enough with the camera. He has made some very odd comments especially about changing the dial settings with his leg!

It's all about necessity. I have two digital M bodies (M8/M9) and an D-Lux 4. I had pre-ordered the X1. The X1 looks nice and has a great picture quality for it's size. But when I think what kind of a DSLR I can get for the price of a X1...

I think it would be better to add a Canon 7D to my portfolio. It's fast, easy to use and more versatile than any compact Leica.

If you have 2 M's i would say your absolutely right. For those who have one M digi body with say a 50mm lens but want also a carry around 35mm equivalent with an IQ thats very 'leica' in looks then the X1 should be considered. Yes you could buy a 24 ASPH but would you carry the camera everywhere as you can with the X1?

I would like to test the X1 against an M8.2/M9 against the 24 ASPH.. That would be interesting

My guess is, after the inital buying frenzy by the diehards, the X1 will be taking up a lot of page space on eBay. I know, I know, large sensor, great lens, bla,bla bla. The only people that will be defending it, are the those foolish enough to spend $2,000.00 + on this dog.:D

The price for sure will reduce. I would like to see the optical viewfinder and case included in the existing price at the very least. I wouldnt say its a dog.... far far from it. The image quality is stunnning..

Craftsman you are barking up the wrong tree

Your probably right. Who can account for taste and buying habits.I expect anyone who lays out this kind of money to defend their purchase. There were a lot of terrible cars built that people bought and just loved and even started clubs around. So I quess all one can really do is sit back and watch with amusement.
