Scan to disc

After scanning 35mm negs on my Minolta Scan Dual IV for a year, I've decided I just don't have the time to do it anymore. I called my local lab and they quoted me $20 per roll for high resolution scans saved to disk and a contact sheet. With as many rolls as I shoot, this will add up quick. Obviously there are 1-hour labs that you can get your images on disc but the quality has been disappointing. Anyone know of other options?

Find a friendly 1 hour lab with a Noritsu scanner using LED technology.

Ask them to create a profile for you with none of the consumer crap in the settings.

That means NO adjustments; no sharpening; no levels/curves; no saturation; .....

Just straight scans at medium, say 18 mb file size. Pay them £1 a roll and you may be amazed at the quality you can obtain. It's the settings they use for regular customers to give their images a bit of punch that spoils your input files.

If you need a big scan for any reason, then scan those few yourself.

Sounds pretty cheap to me. Most of the labs I use in the UK (Metro, Primary, etc.) charge at least £20 (approximately $40) for 35mm develop, contact and low resolution scans to CD.

Rolo, any recommendations for particular labs? I rarely (if ever) shoot any colour neg now but I might change my mind if there is a good low cost option for develop/scan in the UK.

It's a local thing. Knowing what I know now, if I was to move to your street I would phone Noritsu and ask where they have machines installed locally in Walmart, Tesco, Costco ..... that offer really cheap pricing.

The guys in these labs just follow a routine and providing they have been there a few years will care about their customers. They change chemicals as required and my lab will do a paper check before they run a set of prints. I don't think they develop films any different than the trainees at the Pro Labs.

Scanning is a mechanical process providing there is no intervention and the £30,000 LED scanners are top notch.

I started doing it to get a set of screen proof images and found that the quality was good enough for 95% of my needs. Same with CN B&W processing. I never order prints until I select them on viewing. The cost of putting colour film through my Leicas becomes almost negligible especially as I buy film from 7DayShop.

My lab changed to a Photo-Me French built machine for a short while and my images went down the hole. The scans were really, really bad due to over-sharpening and settings couldn't be overridden. Fortunately, they sent it back.

One thing that they won't do because of the time involve is scanning and retaining as a negative image. I would prefer to use PhotoShop to invert to positive.

There's a story about MF film as well that is for another day. :)
