Handling

My M6 had a wonderful Luigi half case. Antique brown, snug fit, excellent feel and lovely smell to it. It was rarely off the camera.

I sold it when I changed to an M8 and have just bought a Leica half case - they call it a camera protector. It's horrid, doesn't fit well, gapes at top and bottom, just doesn't feel right and for all the world might be a cheapo plastic job. Leica - suggest you subcontract camera cases to Luigi.

I have a Luigi strap and love the feel and smell, but I can't bring myself to spend the megabux on his half-cases (would rather put into in the lens fund). I'm using the Leica case, and agree with all your points about it. Pragmatically, I like it fine, because it came with my used M8. I like it better than the Leica grip, which also came with the camera.

Before you spend a lot of money on custom cases, go to a skate board shop and ask for some grip tape. You only need a piece about the size of a postage stamp placed where you normally rest your right hand thumb. Mine is placed just to the right of the 'Made in Germany' printing and the additional grip is all that I think is necessary.

I've seen the Luigi cases and while they are beautifully handcrafted, simply does not work for me. I'd have to get him to completely option out a half case and I would still have to take it on and off due to the frequency of battery and memory card changes. I've found using the Thumbs Up with double accessory shoe and the Leica supplied neckstrap works for me.

A simple and clever strap can be made using some light webbing and a sewing machine. What you need to build is a loop of webbing material that fits over one shoulder crosses the back and chest and rests a few inches above your belt line. Before sewing it be sure to install a metal ring ring which can slide easily on the webbing loop. Attach the metal ring to the right side strap support of the camera using a small split ring for keys.

When you wear the webbing loop the camera will hang vertically under your left arm which is a safe place and usually protected from weather if you are wearing a jacket.

To use the camera just slide in along the loop up to your eye and shoot. It is simple and very effective especially when travelling to keep the camera protected, out of sight and always ready for use.

With this loop and grip tape for my thumb position I feel that handling of the M8 is much improved without additional cost.

Mike's post got me thinking, is there any consensus on what the best "smelling" case is? I know that there are endless threads about the best case and bag and strap and thumb rest and grip and camera-covering and gaff-tape etc... But, the smell is often not given enough print. I pay good money for Sean's stupid camera site and he hasn't even reviewed any cases yet, let alone smelled them!
