I shoot with the DMR and the Metz 54-MZ3. I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to trigger a Metz 54-MZ3 (or any later Metz camera mount flash units) with a Pocket Wizard Plus? If so, could you indicate what is needed to couple the PW+ Receiver to the Metz flash unit? I only use the flash on Manual or Auto as the DMR doesn't allow TTL flash.

Thanks,

Lawrence

You'll need the standard foot SCA301 which should have come with the 54-MZ3. That has a standard 2.5mm jack in the side to take a synch cord.

At the Pocket Wizard end the connector is a standard 3.5mm jack.

You can join the two with any of the following:

  • A mono audio cable with 2.5mm plug at one end and 3.5mm at the other, home made or store-bought.
  • The official Pocket Wizard cable (use the Cable Finder on their website).
  • A Metz or other cable with PC connector at one end and 2.5mm at the other, plus the Pocket Wizard MPCF adapter.

These aren't the only alternatives: e.g. you could use any of the adapters made for off-camera use of standard hot-foot flashes. Mount the adapter on your lighting stand, slide the Metz into the adapter, and connect the adapter's cable or synch socket to the Pocket Wizard using the MPCF adapter or anything else that comes to hand.

Thanks John!

The 2502 is the adapter recommended for the R8 with the Metz and that's what I've used with flash on camera. I still have the original hot shoe adapter and it does have a hole in the side so that must be the SCA301 you've indicated... though it isn't labeled.

Will such a setup allow for the "Auto" setting on the flash unit or will this permit only manual exposure?
